George Orwell is now acknowledged as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. As novelist, essayist, and author of a number of outstanding works of reportage he has exercised an influence on modern thought which is increasingly being recognized. H. G. Wells continues to be widely read as a novelist, short story writer, and as the father of science fiction. Because he was deeply involved with the literary, social, and political issues of his time, a chronology of his life is in a sense a history of ideas in the 20th century. J. R. Hammond offers a definitive chronology of Wells that provides a fascinating insight into the background, life, and times of a major literary figure.
Daniel Defoe occupies a central place in the history of English
literature. As the author of "Robinson Crusoe" and "Moll Flanders"
he can claim, with some justification, to be the creator of the
first novels in English. He was one of the earliest practitioners
of the "desert island" myth which has had such a seminal influence
on the human imagination. In "A Journal of the Plague Year" and "A
Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain" he forged a
distinctive documentary style which deeply influenced later writers
including Wells and Orwell.;In summarizing Defoe's life and
achievements, this book offers a critical overview of his
contribution to the development of the novel and re-establishes him
as a central figure in the history of literature.
H.G. Wells is justly famous as a writer of short stories, but for
too long the originality of his contribution in this field has been
unacknowledged. The present study argues that in his short stories
Wells was not simply emulating the styles and themes of his
predecessors but making a distinctive contribution to the genre
grounded firmly in his approach to fiction. The study demonstrates
that Wells's short stories merit far closer critical attention than
they have yet received and possess considerable psychological and
symbolic insight.

This lively and engaging text offers a panorama of modern Chinese
history through compelling biographies of the famous and obscure.
Spanning five hundred years, they include a Ming dynasty medical
pioneer, a Qing dynasty courtesan, a nineteenth-century Hong Kong
business leader, a Manchu princess, an arsenal manager, a woman
soldier, and a young maid in contemporary Beijing. Through the
lives of these diverse people, readers will gain an understanding
of the complex questions of modern Chinese history: What did it
mean to be Chinese, and how did that change over time? How was
learning encouraged and directed in imperial and post-imperial
China? Was it possible to challenge entrenched gender roles? What
effects did European imperialism have on Chinese lives? How did
ordinary Chinese experience the warfare and political upheaval of
twentieth-century China? What is the nature of the gap between
urban and rural China in the post-Mao years? These richly
researched biographies are written in an accessible and appealing

Milton Friedman and George J. Stigler shaped economics as we
know it today - their Chicago School laid the groundwork for much
of the neoclassical tradition in economic analysis. This book
brings together a collection of letters from these two Noble
laureates from the post-war years, containing new information about
their personal and professional relationships, and also
illuminating the development of ideas which are now fundamental to
economic theory.
The book, expertly edited by Dan and Claire Hammond, contains an
introductory chapter, chronologies for Friedman and Stigler, and
transcripts of sixty eight letters written from 1945 to 1957 along
with enclosures.

This volume reviews the latest research on using genetically engineered plants and plant viruses to produce new products for medicine and industry. Individual chapters cover the three main technologies for engineering plants: Agrobacterium-mediated transformation; particle bombardment transformation; and plant viral vectors. Additional chapters deal with strategies for producing medically important products such as vaccines, human enzymes, monoclonal antibodies, and other therapeutic proteins in plants. In addition to presenting up-to-date reviews of current research efforts, the book also contains some thoughtful discussions on the potential benefits and risks involved in producing pharmaceuticals in plants and the challenges of bringing such products to market.
