In Search of Wholeness: African American Teachers and their Culturally Specific Classroom Practices is a theoretical and practice-oriented treatment of how culture and race influence African American teachers. This collection of essays, edited by Jacqueline Jordan Irvine, assumes that teachers cannot become fully functional persons and competent professionals if their cultural selves remain denied, hidden, and unexplored. Part one reviews the literature related to teachers’ race and culture. Part two includes research studies about teachers confronting issues of culture and race in their personal and professional lives. The final chapter focuses on the responses of three of the teachers whose stories are portrayed in the book. In addition to the compelling case studies, other topics explored include: multicultural professional development for African American teachers, African American teachers’ perceptions of their professional roles and practices, a comparison of effective black and white teachers of African American students, the development of teacher efficacy of an African American middle school teacher, the professional development journey of an effective African American elementary school teacher, seizing hope through culturally responsive praxis, collective stories on culturally specific pedagogy. In Search of Wholeness is an indispensable and groundbreaking collection that administrators, students, and educators of all ages will not want to be without.
Research findings by the National Commission on Excellence, the
Children's Defense Fund, and the College Board, among others,
suggest that much work remains to be done to upgrade the
educational experience and performance of the fastest growing
segment of the American school population, blacks and other
minorities. This country's survival and strength will ultimately
depend on the quality of education given to this important group
that has been systematically and effectively excluded from the
benefits of educational opportunity. Without these benefits, blacks
and other minorities will never achieve economic independence, and
the self-perpetuating cycle of poor school achievement, poverty,
and teen parenthood will grind on relentlessly. This important
study addresses the many facets of this complex problem by
explicating its many roots, assessing strengths and weaknesses
inherent in the present system, and proposing strategies for
dynamic changes. Chapter 1 reviews various societal prescriptions
regarding education and descriptive practices harmful to black
students and uncovers a "hidden" curriculum. The focus of Chapter 2
is on cultural synchronization in style, language, and cognition
and on how disappearing black educators increase the lack of
synchronization. Chapters 3 and 4 detail the effects of teacher
expectations in various contexts including grade level, subject,
and time of year, and present a thorough research study of
teacher-student interactions. The last two chapters outline
strategies for change and implications for training and staff
development exploring Afro-centric responses, parent involvement,
relevant research findings, and various staff development
competenciesfor policy development and prejudice reduction. The
detailed introductory essay, the seven tables and five figures, and
an appendix that provides supplemental information describing the
research study methodology in Chapter 4 complete this valuable
volume. Scholars and students of Afro-American and African Studies,
as well as educational administrators and practitioners will find
this work both timely and provocative.

Data Communications and Networks uses a top-down, Internet-focussed approach to tackle the problem of communication system design. An integrated approach is taken to networks and data communications, with an emphasis that starts from the top level requirements and works downwards, describing how such requirements are fulfilled by lower layers of the transmission chain. While the book contains sufficient detail to provide an excellent foundation, clarity is paramount and care is taken not to swamp the reader with information to the point where the underlying concepts are obscured. The Internet is used as the principle example of a communication system, allowing the reader to follow the system from the application layers, with source coding and security, through the network, with naming and routing algorithms, down to transport and physical aspects of a communication system. Modern techniques such as mobile radio, Voice over IP, and ASDL, are covered, while more traditional aspects such as circuit switching, which still form a significant part of current systems, are not overlooked. By providing a technical introduction and including application examples, this text will have significant appeal to final year students, postgraduates and professionals with a science or engineering background wishing to gain a basic understanding of the key concepts behind data communications engineering.

The purpose of this research was to compare industry and Air Force
commodity council processes. More specifically, this research used
a survey to gather strategic sourcing philosophies and procedures
(with respect to small business participation in procurement
strategies) from successful industry firms. Industry source
selection documentation, applicable government contracting
guidelines, and a literature review of strategic sourcing materials
were also reviewed. The current Air Force commodity council process
and associated historical documents were then studied using a
business process modeling tool. It was determined that the Air
Force process differs from industry in how small business
participation is addressed, the level of detail provided in their
source selection guidance, and the manner in which industry
business practices are utilized. A modified Air Force commodity
council process model and associated commodity council
implementation and operations guide (IG5307.104-93) was proposed.
