This volume includes chapters about the Huguenots and Sephardi Jews as transnational nations in the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the construction of cannabis knowledge cultures in the transatlantic world of the nineteenth century, the role of the German pastor Martin Niemoeller in the construction of transnational religious identities in the aftermath of World War II, and the labor migration - from Cuba to East Germany - within the Socialist world in the 1970s and 1980s.

J. Laurence Hare, Jack Wells, Bruce E. Baker
R2,729 Discovery Miles 27 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Essential Skills for Historians helps undergraduate students make the transition from general university study to a more in-depth study of history, and to gain the skills and techniques they need to conduct an independent research project or embark on a career as a professional historian. The book begins with an examination of the historical discipline and its relevance to contemporary culture. It then guides readers through the steps of developing a research project, using two sample projects that illustrate the connections between core proficiencies such as critical thinking and effective time management, and professional proficiencies such as source criticism and historical interpretation. By following these source projects as they develop, the book also highlights the importance of sound historical practice and a critical understanding of the past in contemporary society. Finally, the book discusses the outcomes of historical research and reveals the wide array of possibilities for careers built upon the skills gained from studying history. Covering key topics such as research strategies, reading sources, effective writing and professional ethics - and with useful features such as glossaries, guidelines for student projects, hands-on exercises, further reading and a companion website containing extra resources - Essential Skills for Historians equips aspiring historians with everything they need to succeed whilst also demonstrating the value of history in the wider world.

Excavating Nations - Archaeology, Museums, and the German-Danish Borderlands (Hardcover): J. Laurence Hare Excavating Nations - Archaeology, Museums, and the German-Danish Borderlands (Hardcover)
J. Laurence Hare
R2,350 Discovery Miles 23 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Excavating Nations traces the history of archaeology and museums in the contested German-Danish borderlands from the emergence of antiquarianism in the early nineteenth-century to German-Danish reconciliation after the Second World War. J. Laurence Hare reveals how the border regions of Schleswig-Holstein and Sonderjylland were critical both to the emergence of professional prehistoric archaeology and to conceptions of German and Scandinavian origins.

At the center of this process, Hare argues, was a cohort of amateur antiquarians and archaeologists who collaborated across the border to investigate the ancient past but were also complicit in its appropriation for nationalist ends. Excavating Nations follows the development of this cross-border network over four generations, through the unification of Germany and two world wars. Using correspondence and site reports from museum, university, and state archives across Germany and Denmark, Hare shows how these scholars negotiated their simultaneous involvement in nation-building projects and in a transnational academic community.
