This book analyzes the effects of economic, social, and political
disruptions that have come with integration into the global economy
for countries in five different regions and the developing world as
a whole. One consequence of such disruptions is increased levels of
terrorism in many countries. In addition, the effects of terrorism
on economic activities were measured. Although the patterns vary
for the regions, there is no doubt that connections exist.
Political links with outside countries have mitigated some of the
negative consequences of entering into greater contact with other
countries. There is less evidence that the increased terrorism from
these disruptions has had negative effects on foreign investment
and tourism. This volume will provide essential materials for
researchers and students interested in the connections between
globalization and terrorism and between terrorism and accompanying
negative economic consequences.
Terrorism and terrorists have become a much talked about topic.
Terrorism is often seen as a Middle Eastern problem and terrorists
are often perceived as only having a Muslim background. It may
surprise many to learn that Americans are and have been terrorists
since the birth of the nation. This book investigates and discusses
many instances in which Americans were themselves the terrorists
and the victims.
Terrorism is not a new phenomenon but has been present for over two
thousand years. It has been used to advance ethnic, religious, and
ideological goals; it has been used by dissidents and states to
maintain control; it has been used at times as a means for
attaining or maintaining power for its own sake. Terrorism has
often appeared as a response to the intrusion of outside groups in
established societies. This book places terrorism in a historical
and analytical context. It is a comparison of terrorist groups over
time, noting both similarities and differences. It will also
contribute to discussions of the underlying causes of terrorism by
providing a broader context than is usually attempted. It is
important to put recent terrorist events in an appropriate context
and to learn what history has to offer for dealing with this type
of political violence.
This volume analyzes the import patterns of selected countries to determine which nations are active importers and which ones import much less than expected. The majority of the work focuses on the industrialized countries, which are at the center of the international trading system, determining which are very active importers and which are not. Controls for wealth, size, and membership in customs areas are included. Countries importing at levels below predicted ones are the countries likely to be most effective at protecting domestic industries from foreign competition. For example, the results permit an evaluation of the arguments that Japan has consistently imported less than would be expected due to the presence of barriers protecting the domestic market.
Methodological advances in consumer behavior are increasing
rapidly. We can characterize these advances by work in two
logically separate but functionally related areas: (a) the
philosophical underpinnings of our methods, and (b) the analytic
strategies for examining the phenomena of interest in the field. An
important aspect in communicating these advances is the
demonstration of their use on focal problems in consumer behavior.
Current research strategies and analytic techniques in the field of
consumer research reflect the dominant logical empiricist
epistemology. The develop ment of new epistemologies (e.g.,
scientific relativism, hypothetical realism), however, is likely to
modify the dominant logical empiricist approach and is also likely
to influence the analytic strategies used to conduct research. For
instance, with the increased awareness of scientific relativism and
hypothet ical realism, greater emphasis is anticipated for
idiographic rather than nomo thetic designs, for observational
rather than experimental designs, for process rather than static
analyses, and for more sophisticated techniques for summariz ing
findings across studies. The major theme underlying this volume is
that conceptual, analytic, and sub stantive diversity are essential
for consumer behavior research to advance. Col lectively, the
chapters we present in this volume are a diverse set of
perspectives for the study of consumer behavior. This volume is
organized into three parts: (1) philosophical orientations toward
consumer behavior research, (2) analytic strategies for consumer
behavior research, and (3) applications of these orientations and
strategies to current research areas."

"No more time for Germans, she said. As though it was for her to
determine this for him. So much was happening. He was forgetting
his knapsack, which he was entitled to keep. And he was forgetting
the other Polish sergeants-the ones he had agreed to go to town
with, to the dance. Already she had him fully confused. And hadn't
she mentioned America, even? What was it she said about America?"
So begins the adventure of "Jadwiga's Crossing," a compelling story
of emigrants from Poland in the period after America's great Civil
War. A young girl from a Baltic fishing community, a proud soldier
in service to Prussian militarism, and the love that compels him to
take the gamble of a lifetime. Theirs is no simple voyage to the
New World as they deal with the challenges of a mismanaged
squarerigger, discord among their fellow passengers, a scarcity of
food, and mounting disasters.
Grundlagenforschnng bedeu- tungsvoll geworden. Die in ihren
zeitlichen Anderungen korrekt wiedergegebenen Stromstarkewerte
haben eine betrachtliche Differenzierung und Wandlung unserer
hamodynamischen Kenntnisse gegeniiber den friiheren, fast
ausschlieBlich von dem Poiseuilleschen Gesetz in seiner starren
Form beherrschten Vorstellung ermaglicht.
