The true story of the government conspiracy to bring down J. Robert
Oppenheimer, America's most famous scientist. On April 12, 1954,
the nation was astonished to learn that J. Robert Oppenheimer was
facing charges of violating national security. Could the director
of the Manhattan Project, the visionary who led the effort to build
the atom bomb, really be a traitor? In this riveting book,
bestselling author Priscilla J. McMillan draws on newly
declassified U.S. government documents and materials from Russia,
as well as in-depth interviews, to expose for the first time the
conspiracy that destroyed one of America's most illustrious
scientists. McMillan recreates the fraught years from 1949 to 1955
when Oppenheimer and a group of liberal scientists tried to head
off the cabal of hard-line air force officials, anti-Communist
politicians, and rival scientists, including physicist Edward
Teller, who were trying to seize control of U.S. policy and build
ever more deadly nuclear weapons. Retelling the story of
Oppenheimer's trial, which took place in utmost secrecy, she
describes how the government made up its own rules and violated
many protections of the rule of law. She also argues that the
effort to discredit Oppenheimer, occurring at the height of the
McCarthy era and sanctioned by a misinformed President Eisenhower,
was a watershed in the Cold War, poisoning American politics for
decades and creating dangers that haunt us today. A chilling tale
of McCarthy-era machinations, this groundbreaking page-turner
rewrites the history of the Cold War.
This book gives an early demonstration of applications of game
theory to international economics - applications that were to
transform this area during the 1990s.
This is the first of the set of three volumes in the Encyclopedia
of Plant Physiology, New Series, that will cover the area of the
hormonal regulation of plant growth and development. The overall
plan for the set assumes that this area of plant physiology is
sufficiently mature for a review of current knowledge to be
organized in terms of unifying principles and processes. Reviews in
the past have generally treated each class of hormone individually,
but this set of volumes is subdivided according to the properties
common to all classes. Such an organization permits the examination
of the hypothesis that differing classes of hormones, acting
according to common principles, are determinants of processes and
phases in plant development. Also in keeping with this theme, a
plant hormone is defined as a compound with the properties held in
common by the native members of the recognized classes of hormone.
Current knowledge of the hormonal regulation of plant development
is grouped so that the three volumes consider advancing levels of
organizational complexity, viz: molecular and subcellular; cells,
tissues, organs, and the plant as an organized whole; and the plant
in relation to its environment. The present volume treats the
molecular and subcellular aspects of hormones and the processes
they regulate. Although it deals with chemically distinct classes
of hormone, this volume stresses properties and modes of studying
them, that are common to all classes.

azote (258). I. Structure et formation.
This volume offers readers a revised and considerably expanded
version of the first Regular Life, edited by McMillan and Kathryn
Smith Fladenmuller in 1997. As the editors note in their
introduction, "The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader
to the Rules of life of the major religious orders within the
monastic, canonical, and mendicant traditions." Included are
admonitions on and examples of the various forms of regular life by
Antony, Syncletica, Pachomius, Basil, Cassian, Augustine, Caesarius
of Arles, Benedict of Nursia, Columbanus, and Benedict of Aniane,
plus selections from Rules for Cluniacs, Carthusians, Cistercians,
the Knights Templar, the Hospitallers, and the followers of Saints
Francis, Clare, and Dominic.
Wood Knocks & Tossed Rocks places the reader in the passenger
seat of the author's truck to ride shotgun on a series of
expeditions with the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, as
seen on Finding Bigfoot, to experience every moment and every bump
in the road as it happens.

Phillip is a boringly normal man, a computer geek, more functional
with logic than with people and their illogical problems. When a
sequence of murders takes place in his east London neighborhood he
feels linked to them. Unsettling visions possess him, hurling him
into a mental breakdown, his decline encouraged by his son, a
repellant and menacing presence lurking at the margins of Phillip's
life. Simultaneously, the crime detective, the careworn Spencer,
yields to a bizarre relationship with his superior officer. Her
attitude towards both the case and Spencer verges on the merciless
and feeds off the gruesome crimes they are trying to solve.
Fathering Sin turns the usual ideas of life and death on their
heads.
Shock tubes utilize a difference in pressures between gases
separated by a diaphragm to create a shock wave when the diaphragm
ruptures. By using sensors of known spacing, the speed of the wave
can be determined. The AFIT 2-inch shock tube was reassembled and
tested to ensure proper and safe operation. A high-speed data
acquisition system was configured to take data at 2 MS/s. This
research showed that the Mach number of the shock waves produced in
this shock tube fall within 7% of theoretical values at speeds
under Mach 3 and within 9% at higher speeds. The peak velocity of
each shock wave was shown to occur at approximately 3 meters from
the diaphragm.
Dottie and Buster During World War II will introduce children as
well as adults to some historical facts about their country during
World War II and to a time in American history when the United
States was at war with two countries, Japan and Germany. They will
read and learn timeline events and important dates of World War II
and geographical locations of the two countries. In this short
story, children will read about the brave American servicemen and
women of World War II who fought and died for their country in the
Pacific at Pearl Harbor and in countries over Europe. Their heroic
deeds and patriotism will never be forgotten. Children and adults
will also read and learn about the social and economic struggle
that American citizens encountered during World War II. American
civilians, women, men, and school children played important roles
in the defense of their country. Their work on the home front as
collectors of scrap metal, paper materials, buyers of U. S. Bonds,
shipbuilders, volunteers, and many other home front efforts, helped
their country win the wars with Germany and Japan.

Dottie and Buster's Trip to the Big City is a true story about the
author and her nephew as children in the 1940's and their trip to
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by train. During this trip, they had the
chance to see the nation's capital city and visit historical places
in Philadelphia, some of which their playmates may never get to see
and will only read about in their school books. The story will
introduce readers to a southern African American family, how they
lived, loved, and had fun during the time of segregation in the
South. As they read, they will be able to explore different
cultural environments of people and their way of life in both the
North and South. The book is intended for educational and
entertainment purposes and will engage children and youths in
active reading. They will read and learn about important cities and
landmarks, famous people and their accomplishments to our great
nation, The United States of America. Dottie's and Buster's Trip to
the Big City can be used as a supplemental teaching tool in
elementary social studies curriculum and will be readily available
to all institutions of learning, e.g. public schools, chartered
schools, church schools, colleges, universities, libraries, and
bookstores for children, youths, and adults. This book will enable
the reader to gain knowledge and understanding of another time era,
to experience the benefits of reading a delightful story, and to
learn a lesson in American history.
