Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs
is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and
bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the
effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to
concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book
presents the latest international research on this area, with
contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at
an international RILEM workshop.
Sulfate Attack on Concrete provides a comprehensive reference to
this important subject. It covers: a short history of concrete
deterioration due to sulfate attack, the origin of sulfates in
concrete, the importance of appropriate concrete processing, forms
and physical-chemical mechanisms of concrete deterioration due to
sulfates, preventative measures, standardisation and numerous case
histories. This book is an essential reference for industry
practitioners involved in concrete science and engineering, and
also for academics and researchers of materials science and
concrete technology.

This volume contains ten invited presentations on the topic of
sulfate attack caused by external sulfate sources. The discussions
concentrate on chemical and physical mechanistic aspects of the
applicable sulfate-to-paste reactions and on the interrelationships
between the internal (e.g., paste composition, pore solution,
concrete matrix permeability) and external (e.g., composition of
aggressive medium, temperataure and humidity, curing practices)
variables.
Rarely visited by outsiders, the ranchers of Sierra de la
Giganta in Baja California Sur live much as their ancestors have
for the past two centuries. They raise goats and cattle and grow a
magnificent variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers in one of
the driest places on the continent. The men, women, and children
depicted in this book have never known the luxury of municipal
water or electricity on their ranches. Yet, as Marchand's
photographs show, they are remarkably self-sufficient in their use
of technologies that would be considered archaic by most standards
today. Some ranches now have solar panels, generators, a light bulb
or two, a radio or TV, and, most recently, a cell phone charger.
But water is supplied either by gravity or a gasoline-powered pump
(though windmills still turn at some ranches), cooking is most
often by wood fire, machaca is ground on a stone metate or pounded
on a stump, and coffee is ground in a hand-cranked mill. Plowing is
still done mostly with mules, and planting, harvesting, and milking
are all done by hand.
In this book a gifted photojournalist introduces us to
individual ranchers and their families and describes their
traditional practices as they move into the twenty-first century.
Marchand's photographs and text are both informative and intimate.
His introduction to this little-known corner of Mexico will delight
travelers and scholars alike.
This easy-to-read book, written by former Toyota factory experts,
will help technicians, emergency responders, and laypersons alike
learn: The basics of hybrid electric operation Common safety
procedures associated with high voltage Maintenance and repair
procedures and cautions With well over 1 million HEV's on the road
today, hybrid vehicles here to stay. Consumers and those that
service hybrid vehicles need to understand how HEV's operate, what
can, and cannot be serviced, and how to stay safe when working on
or around them. This book is a must read if you are: An automotive
service technician Thinking of buying an HEV An emergency responder
who may come in contact with HEV's Greg Marchand is a former Toyota
factory trainer, technical specialist, and owner of AAT, Inc. with
over 20 years experience in the automotive industry. Greg holds an
undergraduate degree in Automotive Technology and an MBA in
Environmental and Organizational Sustainability. Michael Firczuk is
a professor, technical writer, and owner of GPDG, LLC. Michael and
his company provide high quality technical curriculum and
documentation for the automotive aftermarket and OE industry.
Peter J. Marchand's Life in the Cold remains the one book that
offers a comprehensive picture of the interactions of plants and
animals--including humans--with their cold-weather environment.
Focusing on the problems of "winter-active" organisms, Marchand
illuminates the many challenges of sustaining life in places that
demand extraordinary adaptations. The fourth edition of this
classic text includes a new chapter on climate change and its
effects on plants and animals wintering in the North.
