This book contains the papers presented at the international symposium Polycrys- talline Semiconductors - Grain Boundaries and Interfaces (POLYSE '88) that was held in Malente, FRG, from August 29 to September 2, 1988. This conference has two roots: Firstly, it is a successor to a conference on polycrystalline semi- conductors held in Perpignan, France, in 1982 and to a summer school in Erice, Italy, in 1984. Secondly, it continues a series of German workshops on polycrys- talline semiconductors, which have been organized every year since 1983 by two of the present editors (H. P. S. and J. H. W. ) in Stuttgart, FRG. As in these previ- ous workshops, the symposium POLYSE '88 also tried to bridge the gap between fundamental research and technological aspects of polycrystalline semiconductors with emphasis on physical properties. In order to realize this conception, 12 scientists recognized in their fields were invited to give reviews of their respective work. The expert presentations of these scientists complemented by all other contributions, including an ad hoc evening workshop on the chemical analysis of grain boundaries by scanning tunneling microscopy, resulted in a lively and rewarding symposium. Relevante Teilbereiche der Tribologie werden fur den Schmierstoffexperten behandelt. Besonders die praxisgerechte Darstellung ist hervorzuheben, die der Erfahrung der Autoren entspricht. Die in der uberwiegend theoretischen tribologischen Literatur weit verstreuten Hinweise fur Problemlosungen wurden bewertet und zusammengefasst. Aus der langjahrigen Erfahrung der Verfasser in der Bearbeitung schmiertechnischer Fragen wurde ein fur den Praktiker unverzichtbares Nachschlagewerk geschaffen, das mehr bietet als Lexika und umfassender informiert als die vielfaltige Spezialliteratur es kann."

Die 1890 in Gesterreich eingefuhrte Pharmaceutische Studienordnung schreibt fur das Sommer-Semester des zweiten Studienjahres ein obligates Colleg uber mikroskopische Pharmakognosie vor. Den Studenten ein Lehr- mittel zu bieten, das ihnen bei den mikroskopischen Uebungen die Orien- tirung erleichtert und beim Studiren die gesehenen Bilder in der Erinnerung auffrischt, ist der erste Zweck des vorliegenden Buches. Es bildet eine Erganzung fur jedes Lehrbuch der Pharmakognosie, auch fur die mit Abbildungen ausgestatteten. Kein Lehrbuch ist so figurenreich, keines namentlich enthalt so viele mikroskopische Bilder, dass es dem Bedurfniss vollkommen entsprache. Auch fur den Apotheker ist der Atlas bestimmt. Der Apotheker ist fur seine Waare verantwortlich. Er ist verpflichtet, zu prufen, ob sie den Anforderungen der Pharmakopoee entspricht. Das geht bei unzerkleinerten Drogen leidlich, bei geschnittenen schon mitunter sehr schwierig und un- sicher, bei gepulverten gar nicht mit unbewaffnetem Auge. Nun ist es aber allgemein ublich, geschnittene und gepulverte Drogen nicht 1m Laboratorium herzustellen, sondern zu kaufen. Wer diese zerkleinerten Drogen nicht zu untersuchen versteht, kann seiner gesetzlichen V erpflich- tung nicht nachkommen. Er ist vollstandig in die Hand seines Lieferanten gegeben, und das ist um so schlimmer, als der Drogist wieder auf die Ge- wissenhaftigkeit und Ehrlichkeit der Pulverisiranstalten angewiesen zu sein pflegt. Fur die Echtheit und Reinheit eines Pflanzenpulvers kann nur Der- jenige einstehen, der es entweder selbst gemahlen oder mikroskopisch ge- prUft hat.
