The idea for this book came from discussions among participants in
a symposium on biotechnical applications at the "Pacifichem 89"
meeting in Honolulu. It was the majority opinion of this group that
a volume dedicated to biotechnical and biomedical applications of
PEG chemistry would enhance research and development in this area.
Though the book was conceived at the Honolulu meeting, it is not a
proceedings of this symposium. Several groups who did not
participate in this meeting are repre sented in the book, and the
book incorporates much work done after the meeting. The book does
not include contributions in all related areas to which PEG
chemistry has been applied. Several invited researchers declined to
parti.: ipate, and there is not enough space in this single volume
to properly cover all submissions. Chapter I-an overview of the
topic-discusses in brief applications not given detailed coverage
in specifically devoted chapters. The following topics are covered:
introduction to and fundamental properties of PEG and derivatives
in Chapters 1-3; separations using aqueous polymer two-phase
partitioning in Chapters 4-6; PEG-proteins as catalysts in
biotechnical applications in Chapters 7 and 8; biomedical
applications of PEG-proteins in Chapters 9-13; PEG modified
surfaces for a variety of biomedical and biotechnical applications
in Chapters 14-20; and synthesis of new PEG derivatives in Chapters
21 and 22."
This is the story of a brave young girl, Elodie-Rose, who one day
decides to change the world and keep all her fucks in her basket.
Wait a minute. You're confused. What are fucks, you ask? It's quite
simple, really. Fucks are her self-esteem; all the happy, sad and
wonderful thoughts that sit in her basket. That sit in every girl's
basket! And every girl must give these fucks away every time
someone asks. One day Elodie-Rose decides to break rank and find
out what happens if those fucks stay where they are...

We need scarcely note that the topic of this book is the stuff of
headlines. Around the world, political, economic, educational,
military, religious, and social relations of every variety have a
racial or ethnic component. One cannot begin to understand the
history or contemporary situation of the United States, the Soviet
Union, China, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Great Britain, Lebanon,
Mexico, Canada-indeed, almost any land-without careful attention to
the influence of cultural and racial divisions. Preparation of this
new edition has brought a strong sense of deja vu, with regard both
to the persistence of old patterns of discrimination, even if in
new guises, and also to the persistence of limited and constraining
explanations. We have also found, however, rich new empirical
studies, new theoretical perspectives, and greatly expanded
activity and analyses from members of minority groups. Although
this edition is an extensive revision, with reference both to the
data used and the theoretical approaches examined, we have not
shifted from our basically analytical perspective. We strongly
support efforts to reduce discrimination and prejudice; but these
can be successful only if we try to understand where we are and
what forces are creating the existing situation. We hope to reduce
the tendency to use declarations and condem nations of other
persons' actions as substitutes for an investigation of their
causes and consequences."
This 1977 book reports on an experimental program that was designed
to discover whether a summer of intensive academic work and
recreation on a college campus could significantly improve the
educational performance of economically disadvantaged
thirteen-year-old children. For three successive summers,
sixty-five experimental participants and sixty-five control
participants were selected randomly from schools in two large
cities and three small cities. Experimental and control pairs were
carefully matched. The results of this program were assessed in
terms of six indicators: persistence in school, junior high school
grades, senior high school grades, achievement test scores,
assignment to a special school track, and attendance at academic or
other special schools. On all six measures the performance of
experimental pupils was judged superior to that of their matched
control partners. The results of Middle Start indicate that even in
the middle years of schooling, inner-city children can be helped
significantly by skilful educational intervention.
