1911. This American clergyman and author also graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. Ordained by the Protestant Episcopal Church, he was chaplain of the First Pennsylvania Volunteers at the time of the Spanish-American War. He is best known by his historical novels. Set in the mid-1800s, the first half of this novel is a sea adventure fantasy of the primitive reversion of island castaways. Upon their return to civilization, the story develops into an American Civil War adventure. The book begins: The Master of the Swiftsure, ignorant of the acute observations that wise Solon addressed to another potentate almost as supreme in his domain as a lord of the sea on his quarterdeck, counted himself a happy man, although he was yet young and very much alive. The two objects upon which his happiness rested, so he thought, as securely as the foundations of the deep are laid in the bars of the sea-as Sailor Jonah would phrase it-were both at this moment before his vision. 1914. Dixon's earlier works including The Clansman, which was made into the movie, Birth of A Nation, made his reputation as the anti-black novelist for the Jim Crow south. Dixon writes To The Reader: In the historical romance which I have woven of the dramatic events of the life of Jefferson Davis I have drawn his real character unobscured by passion or prejudice. Forced by his people to lead their cause, his genius created an engine of war so terrible in its power that through it five million Southerners, without money, without a market, without credit, withstood for four years the shock of twenty million men of their own blood and of equal daring, backed by boundless resources. The achievement is without a parallel in history, and adds new glory to the records of our race. The scenes have all been drawn from authentic records in my possession. 1914. Margaret Hill McCarter became well known during the early 20th Century for her novels set against the background of the Kansas Prairies. Winning the Wilderness begins: The old Aydelot farm reached quite down to the little village of Cloverdale, from which it was separated by Clover Creek. But the Aydelot farmhouse stood a good half-mile away up the National pike road toward the Virginia state line. The farm consisted of two long narrow strips of ground, bordering the road on either side and walled about by forests hiding stagnant marshes in their black-shadowed depths. Francis Aydelot had taken up the land from the government before the townsite was thought of. Farming was not to his liking and his house had been an inn, doing a thriving business with travelers going out along that great National highway in ante-railway days.
