Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This book gives an up-to-date analysis of the epidemiology of
asthma i n children and adults, the role of steroids in asthma
management and n ew and novel asthma therapies. Specific chapters
deal with the epidem iology of asthma mortality and of childhood
asthma, others discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the use of
b2-adenoreceptor agonists, cor ticosteroids, theophylline and new
generation phosphodiesterase inhibi tors in the treatment of
asthma. A new non-invasive method to assess a irway inflammation is
also presented as well as steroid-sparing therap ies in asthma. The
book addresses clinicians and basic scientists wit h an interest in
asthma epidemiology, steroids and future therapies. I t is also of
interest to clinical and no-clinical teachers in academic
disciplines relating to respiratory disease.
Mapping the Megalopolis: Order and Disorder in Mexico City brings
the humanities and the social sciences into a conversation about
Mexico City in its social, political, and aesthetic manifestations.
Through a shared exploration of the order and disorder that
mutually constitute the city, contributing authors engage topics
such as the privatization of public space, challenges to existing
conceptualizations of the urban form, and variations on the flaneur
and other urban actors. Mexico City is truly a city of versions,
and Mapping the Megalopolis celebrates the intersection of the
image of the city and the lived experience of it. Readers will find
substantive entries on a great variety of Mexico City's monumental
and counter-monumental spaces, as well as some of its pivotal
contemporary debates and cultural products. The volume serves both
as supplemental reading on the world city or the Latin American
city, and as a central text in a multidisciplinary study of Mexico
City.
In this entertaining and thought-provoking book, Tony Alessandra
and Michael O'Connor argue that the "Golden Rule" is not always the
best way to approach people. Rather, they propose the Platinum
Rule: "Do unto others as "they'd" like done unto them." In other
words, find out what makes people tick and go from there.
1. 1. Invasive versus Non-Invasive Clinical Measurements in
Medicine Clinical measurement has become an essential complement to
traditional physical diagnosis. An ideal clinical measurement
should be quantitative, have a high level of reliability and
accuracy, be safe, acceptable to the patient, easy to perform and
non-invasive. The latter demands that the technique should not
break the skin or the lining epithelium and should be devoid of
effects on the tissues of the body by the dissipation of energy or
the introduction of infection [1]. It is therefore logical that for
a given measurement, a non-invasive test will be preferred if it
provides the same information with the same accuracy and precision.
In the following sections, we will discuss the role of various
non-invasive or relatively non-invasive methods to assess airway
inflammation in asthma and concentrate on the only direct method of
induced sputum examination. 1. 2. Why Is Assessment of Airway
Inflammation Important in Asthma? Inflammation is a localized
protective response elicited by injury or destruc tion of tissues
which serves to destroy, dilute or wall off both the injurious
agent and the injured tissue [2]. The role of inflammation in
asthma was rec ognized long ago. In his textbook The Principles and
Practice of Medicine, in 1892, Sir William Osler described
"bronchial asthma . . . in many cases is a spe cial form of
inflammation of the smaller bronchioles . . .

David Redsicker provides these statistics and much more, including practical methods, information, and advice for investigating these types of crimes, in Practical Fire and Arson Investigation, Second Edition. Extensively rewritten second edition of this practical manual - More than 40% new material! Practical Fire and Arson Investigation, Second Edition is a significantly revised, updated, and expanded new edition of this best-selling book in the Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations series, edited by Vernon Geberth. This attractively illustrated book reviews the effects of
agricultural development on bird populations in Britain. Examining
modern farmland as a bird habitat, it explains the changes, both in
habitat structure and in available resources, that have occurred as
a result of mechanisation and use of agrochemicals. Farmland bird
communities are described, and their composition related to farm
structure and land use. Based extensively on empirical data
extracted from the British Trust for Ornithology's Common Bird
Census and from nest histories recorded in the BTO'S Nest Record
Scheme, the book presents an important analysis of the position of
agricultural bird populations under modern farming systems.
Particular examination has been made of the impact of changing
methods, rotations and crops, which have been underestimated in the
past. Resulting from the co-operation between a professional
ornithologist and a working cereal farmer, this book provides an
objective and informed view of the impact of British agriculture on
bird populations.
The 9 chapters in this book have been selected from the contents of
the Musculoskeletal System section in Grainger & Allison's
Diagnostic Radiology 6e. These chapters provide a succinct
up-to-date overview of current imaging techniques and their
clinical applications in daily practice and it is hoped that with
this concise format the user will quickly grasp the fundamentals
they need to know. Throughout these chapters, the relative merits
of different imaging investigations are described, variations are
discussed and recent imaging advances are detailed. Please note
that imaging techniques of the spine are considered in the separate
section "The Spine" in Grainger & Allison's Diagnostic
Radiology 6e.
In 2004, the National Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and
Fetal Alcohol Effect, coordinated by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention's National Center on Birth Defects and
Developmental Disabilities, established a working group committed
to addressing the needs of individuals living with fetal alcohol
spectrum disorders (FASDs) and their families. The culmination of
this working group's discussions and Task Force deliberations is
reflected in this Call to Action report. The document highlights
ten recommendations to improve and expand efforts regarding early
identification, diagnostic services, and quality research on
interventions for individuals with FASDs and their families.
Additional background information is provided to support these
recommendations and to further educate readers on the topic of
FASDs, progress to date, and what still needs to be done to support
individuals with FASDs. The intent of this report is to guide
federal, state and local agencies, researchers and clinicians,
family support groups, and other partners on actions needed to
advance essential services for individuals with FASDs and their
families and to promote continued intervention research efforts.
