A review of the literature pertaining to the neurobehavioral
pharmacology of abusable drugs, this is the only book to survey
each of the eleven classes of addictive drugs from the perspectives
of neurological, behavioral, and clinical pharmacology. Designed to
serve as a companion text to the DSM-IV manual, the Handbook
provides comprehensive information about each drug and drug class
having abuse potential with respect to their pharmaceutical
mechanisms and actions.
These two volumes are the Proceedings of the first special interest
meeting instigated and organized by the joint Technical Section and
College in Applied Probability of ORSA and THlS. This meeting,
which took place January 5-7, 1981 at Florida Atlantic University
in Boca Raton, Florida, had the same name as these Proceedings:
Applied Probability-Computer Science, the Interface. The goal of
that conference was to achieve a meeting of, and a cross
fertilization between, two groups of researchers who, from
different starting points, had come to work on similar problems,
often developing similar methodologies and tools. One of these
groups are the applied probabilists, many of whom consider their
field an offspring of mathematics, and who find their motivation in
many areas of application. The other is that group of computer
scientists who, over the years, have found an increasing need in
their work for the use of probabilistic models. The most visible
area of common methodology between these two groups is networks of
queues, Hhich by itself could have been the theme of an entire
conference. FunctionQl areas which are, or are becoming, sources of
exciting problems are computer performance analysis, data base
analysis, analysis of communication protocols, data networks, and
mixed voice-data telephone networks. The reader can add to this
list by going through the papers in these Proceedings.
It is generally acknowledged that the most cost-effective means of
curtailing alcohol and drug abuse is prevention. Providing
interventions to at-risk individuals before they develop serious
problems with substance use is the most important component of the
"war on drugs." Fortunately, the past decade has seen a dramatic
increase in the quantity and quality of scientific research on
those areas crucial to the advancement of prevention science.
This book compiles a tremendous amount of information about
prevention which has accumulated in recent years. Documenting these
accomplishments and setting the stage for future efforts comprise
the focus of this book.
"Prevention and Societal Impact of Drug and Alcohol Abuse" is
divided into four parts. Part I contains introductory chapters
addressing current issues in prevention science and characteristics
of abusable substances. Part II includes chapters on the historical
contexts of substance abuse and the deleterious health consequences
of alcohol and other drugs. Part III focuses on the impact of drug
and alcohol abuse on society. Included are chapters on alcohol and
drug abuse and driving, infectious illness, disability, managed
care, the criminal justice system and adolescents and adults, sale
and distribution, the media, and community responses. Part IV
consists of chapters on prevention in specific settings and with
certain populations.

Grasp the important themes, perspectives, and theories of the field
with CLASSICS OF ORGANIZATION THEORY, 8e. This collection of the
most enduring works in organization theory, written by
distinguished theorists, describes what organization theory is, how
it has developed, and how its development has coincided with events
and changes in other fields.
This study concludes that the Air Force should reconsider its
adherence to the centralized control portion of its master tenet,
centralized control/decentralized execution at the theater level.
There are four reasons for this. First, many of the initial
motivations for why Airman instituted centralized control are no
longer valid. In the past, mass was achieved through numbers of
airplanes, it can now achieved through numbers of precision
munitions. In the past numerous aircraft were required to destroy a
target, now one aircraft can achieve that same level of
destruction. Technology provides the ability to subscribe to
network centric warfare where before, hierarchical chains of
command were required. Second, the enemy is adaptive. The enemy
will continue to disperse, mass quickly, attack, and rapidly
disperse again. This limits engagement of the enemy to fleeting
moments. Control of airpower below theater level best adapts to
this new time constraint. Third, I present six studies
demonstrating centralized control has never taken place at the
theater level. Never having achieved centralized control at theater
level does not automatically mean the Air Force should give up on
that goal. However, it does imply another method of airpower
employment may be feasible. Exacerbating the centralized control of
airpower debate is the Air Force's own confusion on the topic. The
Air Force fully defined centralized control only recently. The
animosity and confusion taking place between services while getting
centralized control defined has created unnecessary tension amongst
sister services.
