Reading Across Worlds - Transnational Book Groups and the Reception of Difference (Hardcover): J. Procter, B. Benwell Reading Across Worlds - Transnational Book Groups and the Reception of Difference (Hardcover)
J. Procter, B. Benwell
R1,969 Discovery Miles 19 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Combining sustained empirical analysis of reading group conversations with four case studies of classic and contemporary novels: Things Fall Apart, White Teeth, Brick Lane and Small Island, this book pursues what can be gained through a comparative approach to reading and readerships.

Comparing Postcolonial Diasporas (Hardcover): M. Keown, D. Murphy, J. Procter Comparing Postcolonial Diasporas (Hardcover)
M. Keown, D. Murphy, J. Procter
R1,640 Discovery Miles 16 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited collection breaks new ground within the field of postcolonial diaspora studies, moving beyond the predominantly Anglophone bias of much existing scholarship by investigating comparative links between a range of Anglophone, Francophone, Hispanic and Neerlandophone cultural contexts. Ranging across the disciplines of history, sociology, literary analysis, cultural studies and the visual arts, the collection examines both the contributions and limitations of existing postcolonial diaspora scholarship, as well as developing new cross-disciplinary theoretical paradigms. Exploring a variety of geographical locations including Europe, the Americas, the Pacific and the Middle East, the collection is divided into three main sections: 'Discovering Europe' (with essays by John McLeod, Elleke Boehmer and Frances Gouda, and Siobhan Shilton); 'Nostalgia and the Longing for Home' (featuring Patrick Williams, Patria Roman-Velasquez and Janet Wilson); and 'Comparative Diasporic Contexts' (with contributions from Celia Britton, Mohit Prasad and Bill Marshall), concluding with a postscript by Elizabeth Ezra and Terry Rowden.

Organic Synthesis using Samarium Diiodide - A Practical Guide (Hardcover, Edition.): David J. Procter, Robert A. Flowers,... Organic Synthesis using Samarium Diiodide - A Practical Guide (Hardcover, Edition.)
David J. Procter, Robert A. Flowers, Troels Skrydstrup
R3,345 Discovery Miles 33 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Samarium diiodide is one of the most important reducing agents available to synthetic organic chemists. The lanthanide(II) reagent acts by single-electron transfer to organic substrates leading to the formation of both radical and/or anionic intermediates. The power of the reagent arises from its versatility - samarium diiodide can be used in processes ranging from functional group conversions to elaborate carbon-carbon bond-forming cyclization sequences that result in a dramatic increase in molecular complexity. In addition, reactions involving samarium diiodide often show high stereoselectivity as samarium ions can coordinate to Lewis basic sites on substrates and can direct the stereochemical course of reactions. The ability to fine-tune the reactivity of the reagent by the use of additives and co-solvents is an additional, attractive feature. Although samarium diiodide is used extensively by organic chemists, there is still a widely held view that the reagent can be difficult to prepare and use. In addition, samarium diiodide can mediate such a wide variety of organic chemistry that potential new users are often overawed by the extensive primary literature on the reagent. The objective of this book is to provide a concise, practical guide to the reagent. Rather than being a comprehensive review of the chemistry of samarium diiodide, this user-friendly book adopts an "an all you need to know" approach to the topic. The international authors are well-known for their work with the reagent and their expertise covers current developments in new reactivity and selectivity, applications in target synthesis, co-solvent and additive effects, coordination chemistry and mechanism. The book includes the best methods for preparing and handling the reagent, how solvents, co-solvents and additives alter reactivity, the basic mechanisms of reactions, common transformations using the reagent, and emerging areas in samarium diiodide chemistry. The authors have distilled the extensive primary literature to allow the reader to quickly grasp an understanding of the reagent and its utility. The illustrative practical procedures help the reader to prepare and use the reagent in the laboratory while references from the recent literature allow readers to pursue their interest in the popular reagent. The book also contains many illustrations and chemical schemes.

Organometallic Chemistry - Volume 34 (Hardcover, Edition.): Dominic S. Wright, Andrew E.H. Wheatley, A Sella, J. Brennan, Paul... Organometallic Chemistry - Volume 34 (Hardcover, Edition.)
Dominic S. Wright, Andrew E.H. Wheatley, A Sella, J. Brennan, Paul Jelliss, …
R10,870 Discovery Miles 108 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Organometallic chemistry is an interdisciplinary science which continues to grow at a rapid pace. Although there is continued interest in synthetic and structural studies the last decade has seen a growing interest in the potential of organometallic chemistry to provide answers to problems in catalysis synthetic organic chemistry and also in the development of new materials. This Specialist Periodical Report aims to reflect these current interests reviewing progress in theoretical organometallic chemistry, main group chemistry, the lanthanides and all aspects of transition metal chemistry. Volume 34 covers literature published up to January 2006.

St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals ' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty " We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. We want to restore 1,000 old Catholic books to the market. We ask for your assistance and prayers. This book is a photographic reprint of the original The original has been inspected and many imperfections in the existing copy have been corrected. At Saint Pius X Press our goal is to remain faithful to the original in both photographic reproductions and in textual reproductions that are reprinted. Photographic reproductions are given a page by page inspection, whereas textual reproductions are proofread to correct any errors in reproduction.
