The Future of European Social Democracy - Building the Good Society (Hardcover, New): H. Meyer, J. Rutherford The Future of European Social Democracy - Building the Good Society (Hardcover, New)
H. Meyer, J. Rutherford
R1,479 Discovery Miles 14 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

European social democracy is in crisis. In the last decade it has ceased to be about either society or democracy. The authors explore its values, how it can be revived and what kind of political economy it requires to thrive. This book includes a foreword by the two leaders of the 'Building the Good Society' project, Andrea Nahles and Jon Cruddas.

R1,068 Discovery Miles 10 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While many contemplate roaming the world, at 22, Laurie Rutherford Pederson embarked on a solo journey of 365 days, beginning in December 1976. She recorded her many adventures, sublime to horrific, in twenty-seven journals from which this book emerged. The Victoria, B.C. native worked as a travel agent, creating her own itinerary to countries that intrigued her. She explored these exotic locations, each replete with its historic and often perilous political landscapes, using all means of transport: from a luggage rack on a train in India to rickshaws to horseback, even a boat on the Canal du Midi. Family friends in several countries provided respites of gracious hospitality and rollicking entertainment; but, to her credit, Pederson writes with equal appreciation of the many strangers-locals and fellow travellers-she encountered along the way. Her prose sparkles with hilarious interior monologues and a cinematographer's attention to detail. From a near-fatal motorcycle accident on Bali to a brush with death at the Israel-Lebanese border, there is adventure, romance, fear and reflection. The author left her secure home in Victoria as a young adventuress; she returned a woman. Pederson's memoir is contemplative yet spontaneous, capturing a time of great change in the world.

Nonlinear Control of Fixed-Wing UAVs with Time-Varying and Unstructured Uncertainties (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Michail G.... Nonlinear Control of Fixed-Wing UAVs with Time-Varying and Unstructured Uncertainties (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Michail G. Michailidis, Kimon P. Valavanis, Matthew J. Rutherford
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book introduces a comprehensive and mathematically rigorous controller design for families of nonlinear systems with time-varying parameters and unstructured uncertainties. Although the presented methodology is general, the specific family of systems considered is the latest, NextGen, unconventional fixed-wing unmanned aircraft with circulation control or morphing wings, or a combination of both. The approach considers various sources of model and parameter uncertainty, while the controller design depends not on a nominal plant model, but instead on a family of admissible plants. In contrast to existing controller designs that consider multiple models and multiple controllers, the proposed approach is based on the 'one controller fits all models' within the unstructured uncertainty interval. The book presents a modeling-based analysis and synthesis approach with additive uncertainty weighting functions for accurate realization of the candidate systems. This differs significantly from existing designs in that it is capable of handling time-varying characteristics. This research monograph is suitable for scientists, engineers, researchers and graduate students with a background in control system theory who are interested in complex engineering nonlinear systems.
