In an ever-increasing domain of activity Amino Acids Peptides and
Proteins provides an annual compilation of the world's research
effort into this important area of biological chemistry. Volume 30
provides a review of literature published during 1997. Comprising a
comprehensive review of significant developments at this
biology/chemistry interface each volume opens with an overview of
amino acids and their applications. Work on peptides is reviewed
over several chapters ranging from current trends in their
synthesis and conformational and structural analysis to
peptidomimetics and the discovery of peptide-related molecules in
nature. The application of advanced techniques in structural
elucidation is incorporated into all chapters whilst periodic
chapters on metal complexes of amino acids, peptides and
beta-lactams extend the scope of coverage. Efficient searching of
specialist topics is facilitated by the sub-division of chapters
into discrete subject areas allowing annual trends to be monitored.
All researchers in the pharmaceutical and allied industries and at
the biology/chemistry interface in academia will find this an
indispensable reference source.
Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed
review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by
teams of leading authorities in the relevant specialist fields, the
series creates a unique service for the active research chemist
with regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular
areas of chemistry. Historically, The Royal Society of Chemistry
and its predecessor, The Chemical Society, have published reports
of developments in chemistry since the end of the 19th century. By
1967 however, the sheer volume of chemistry published had become so
great that it was decided to split the research into specialist
areas, and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born.
Current subject areas covered are Amino Acids, Peptides and
Proteins. Carbohydrate Chemistry, Catalysis, Electron Spin
Resonance, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Organometallic Chemistry.
Organophosphorus Chemistry, Photochemistry and Spectroscopic
Properties of Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds. From time to
time, the series has altered according to the fluctuating degrees
of activity in the various fields, but these volumes remain a
superb reference point for researchers.
Most nuclear proliferation literature is focused on states seeking
nuclear weapons, conducted in most cases clandestinely. The sharing
of nuclear weapons technology between states is as important
strategically, if unexpected, because nuclear weapons are such a
powerful instrument in international politics. This book proposes
to answer why, if nuclear weapons are such good preservers of
peace, are states not more willing to see them proliferate?
Schofield also examines the underlying phenomenon of the threat of
proliferation races, and how nonproliferation bargains between
adversaries make nuclear sharing far less common. But sharing is
not rare. This book proposes a theory to explain nuclear sharing
and surveys its rich history from its beginnings in the Second
World War, including the cases of France-Israel, US-NATO,
Russia-China, Israel-South Africa, China-Pakistan and
Pakistan-Iran, as well as the incidence of soft balancing and
permissive nuclear sharing in the cases of the US and Japan, Israel
and India.
Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed
review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical
research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series
creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying
regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas
of chemistry. For over 90 years The Royal society of Chemistry and
its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports
charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form
of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry
could no longer be contained within one volume and the series
Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports
themselves still existed but were divided into two, and
subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic, and
Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in
chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has
altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various
fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while
others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some
have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be
discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can
be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
There is a consensus, captured by proponents of militarism theory,
that militaries seek wars to enhance their institutional influence,
and that they promote expansionist policies because it is in line
with their training. However, most military-run states, and those
regimes influenced by their militaries, termed militarized regimes,
spend much of their time at peace. This book questions the
underlying logic of the militarist explanation and seeks to propose
a more tragic argument based on the distorting impact of military
indoctrination and command practices on civil government
institutions. The theory is applied to seven case studies of the
periods leading up to the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistan Wars, the
1956, 1967, and 1973 Arab Israeli Wars, the 1969-75 Iran-Iraq
border conflict, and the 1979 Iraqi invasion of Iran.
With bright color photographs and completely up-to-date
information, this authoritative guidebook introduces adventurers
and harvesters to more than 80 of Alaska's most common wild edible
plants. Alaska’s Wild Plants is the perfect guide to tuck in your
backpack as you explore Alaska’s lands. Now reorganized to be
more user friendly with a new introduction to foraging, this
informative book will help you discover the bounty of the land and
its plants around you. Understand basic principles to foraging and
easy plant preparations. Learn about each plant's nutritional
content, and medicinal and culinary uses. Discover the habitats
where the plant can be found and how to harvest it correctly.
Identify the plant’s physical characteristics with an
accompanying color photograph. Find more expert sources to continue
your plant education. For explorers, foragers, harvesters, or just
the casually interested, this book will help readers recognize
Alaska’s most common edible plants, including chickweed, high
bush cranberry, crowberry, sweet gale, and more.

This work presents an overview of recent developments in social
choice theory and welfare economics, drawn from the proceedings of
the eighth conference in the International Symposia in Economic
Theory and Econometrics series under the general editorship of
William Barnett. The volume is divided into four parts, each
exploring broad themes in social choice theory and welfare
economics. First, an overview of the short, yet intense period of
the subject's historical development. Second, a discussion of the
ethical aspects of social choice, encompassing such issues as equal
opportunity, individual rights and population monotonicity. Third,
a study of the algebraic and combinatorial aspects of social choice
theory. The final section is devoted to a study of aggregation with
risk aversion to current and future variables, and the creation of
a an intertemporal framework to go beyond the usual static
description of income distributions measured over a short period.
