The book's aim, however, is not to dispel roguishness but rather to discern the theological motives behind Sterne's comic rhetoric, from Tristram Shandy and the sermons to A Sentimental Journey. To this end, Stark reveals a veritable avalanche of biblical themes and allusions to be found in Sterne, often and seemingly awkwardly in the middle of sex jokes, and yet the effect is not to produce irreverence. On the contrary, we find an irreverently reverent apologetic, Stark argues, and a priest who knows how to play gracefully with religious ideas. Through Sterne, in fact, we might rethink humour's role in the service of religion.

The intent of this book is to describe those perceptual and cognitive components which contribute to skilled motor performance in a wide variety of disciplines, including sports, microsurgery, video games, and speech. Also considered are issues in the measurement of motor skill, the development of motor skill across the life span, and the importance of individual differences in the development of motor skill. Many chapters contain studies employing the expertise approach used so successfully to study cognitive skills in psychology. Using this approach, expert performers are compared to novices on domain relevant laboratory tasks in order to determine whether specific cognitive or perceptual processes are related to performance differences.

Based on more than ten years of research, Motivational Interviewing With Couples provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations, processes, and strategies unique to Motivational Interviewing (MI) with couples. Drawing on Interdependence Theory, this approach to MI positions the couple as the client. Relationship functioning-the extent to which partners are satisfied with, invested in, and committed to the relationship-is viewed as a mechanism to achieve change. MI-based interventions historically have been shown effective in promoting behavior change across a broad range of problem areas, including substance use and sexual health, two issues that are discussed at length in the book. While the initial concepts of this intervention are substantially informed by work with sexual minority male couples, the principles can be applied broadly to couple-based processes relevant to a wide array of health behaviors and regardless of clients' gender and sexual orientation. In addition to introducing Interdependence Theory and discussing its implications for MI, Motivational Interviewing With Couples offers a lexicon of counseling techniques used specifically in couples' sessions. These strategies address the challenges of balancing attention to the relationship as well as both individual partners, drawing out relationship strengths, clarifying shared goals, mitigating conflict in session, and planning together for change.
