Biblical Sterne - Rhetoric and Religion in the Shandyverse (Hardcover): Ryan J. Stark Biblical Sterne - Rhetoric and Religion in the Shandyverse (Hardcover)
Ryan J. Stark
R3,368 Discovery Miles 33 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Is Laurence Sterne one of the great Christian apologists? Ryan Stark recommends him as such, perhaps to the detriment of the parson's roguish reputation. The book's aim, however, is not to dispel roguishness but rather to discern the theological motives behind Sterne's comic rhetoric, from Tristram Shandy and the sermons to A Sentimental Journey. To this end, Stark reveals a veritable avalanche of biblical themes and allusions to be found in Sterne, often and seemingly awkwardly in the middle of sex jokes, and yet the effect is not to produce irreverence. On the contrary, we find an irreverently reverent apologetic, Stark argues, and a priest who knows how to play gracefully with religious ideas. Through Sterne, in fact, we might rethink humour's role in the service of religion.

R3,625 Discovery Miles 36 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Literacy and Reading Programmes for Children and Young People: Case Studies from Around the Globe presents interviews with over 40 librarians from around the world who tell of their library programs. The volumes are arranged geographically with Volume 1 offering interviews from library professionals from the USA and Europe, and with Volume 2 sharing programs from Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East. The volumes highlight the diversity of the types of programs catering to the varying needs of children and young adults throughout the world. Case studies featured in this book outline the details of programs, events, and activities provided by over 40 organizations in the context of social capital and social inclusion. Each interview chapter discusses the contributions made to literacy development and community building of children and teens. With the many variations and examples of best practice, librarians and educators can glean new ideas for their own programs. The interviews reveal the challenges and issues faced and the work being achieved in vastly different environments, in many geographic areas, and in diverse economic, social, and cultural contexts. The programs include those of national and state libraries, public libraries, and mobile libraries carried out by public libraries, NGOs, and commercial organizations in both developed and developing countries. They also feature programs of multicultural libraries, libraries for indigenous people, and libraries for refugees. This publication complements the range of initiatives and activities carried out by IFLA's Libraries for Children and Young Adults Section that supports library services and reading promotion initiatives catering to children and young adults around the world. These volumes are rich in variety and will provide much food for thought for creating unique and successful library programs.

Cognitive Issues in Motor Expertise, Volume 102 (Hardcover): J. Starkes, F. Allard Cognitive Issues in Motor Expertise, Volume 102 (Hardcover)
J. Starkes, F. Allard
R2,802 Discovery Miles 28 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The intent of this book is to describe those perceptual and cognitive components which contribute to skilled motor performance in a wide variety of disciplines, including sports, microsurgery, video games, and speech. Also considered are issues in the measurement of motor skill, the development of motor skill across the life span, and the importance of individual differences in the development of motor skill. Many chapters contain studies employing the expertise approach used so successfully to study cognitive skills in psychology. Using this approach, expert performers are compared to novices on domain relevant laboratory tasks in order to determine whether specific cognitive or perceptual processes are related to performance differences.

This volume will be of value to kinesiologists, sport psychologists, physical educators, and cognitive psychologists who are interested in a new perspective on the nature of motor skills. The majority of the chapters include reviews of the literature necessary to understand the case being made. Thus, the book may be understood by any reader with a basic course in psychology or motor behavior.

War and Taxes (Paperback): Kirk J Stark, Joseph J Thorndike, Stephen A. Bank War and Taxes (Paperback)
Kirk J Stark, Joseph J Thorndike, Stephen A. Bank
R915 Discovery Miles 9 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The history of America's tax system can be written largely as a history of America's wars. During World War II, Americans were urged to ration food, raise money, and accept higher taxes. After September 11, we were given tax cuts and asked to shop. Has the United States broken a noble tradition of fiscal sacrifice with the current, unprecedented wartime tax cuts, or are they the mark of new economic, and social forces at work? War and Taxes weighs the question by considering six conflicts that span the American Revolution to the present war in Iraq.

Tyrel J. Starks
R1,436 Discovery Miles 14 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Based on more than ten years of research, Motivational Interviewing With Couples provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations, processes, and strategies unique to Motivational Interviewing (MI) with couples. Drawing on Interdependence Theory, this approach to MI positions the couple as the client. Relationship functioning-the extent to which partners are satisfied with, invested in, and committed to the relationship-is viewed as a mechanism to achieve change. MI-based interventions historically have been shown effective in promoting behavior change across a broad range of problem areas, including substance use and sexual health, two issues that are discussed at length in the book. While the initial concepts of this intervention are substantially informed by work with sexual minority male couples, the principles can be applied broadly to couple-based processes relevant to a wide array of health behaviors and regardless of clients' gender and sexual orientation. In addition to introducing Interdependence Theory and discussing its implications for MI, Motivational Interviewing With Couples offers a lexicon of counseling techniques used specifically in couples' sessions. These strategies address the challenges of balancing attention to the relationship as well as both individual partners, drawing out relationship strengths, clarifying shared goals, mitigating conflict in session, and planning together for change. Chapters include extended examples of MI sessions involving sexual minority male couples to illustrate the practice of couples MI. Three special issues chapters focus on common challenges in therapy; future directions for MI research and practice; and how to integrate attention to sexual satisfaction within couples as well as sexual safety, helping to shift the view of sex therapy as a specialty field focused on dysfunction or sexual risk reduction to one that integrates sexuality as a component of overall health and well-being.

For a very long time now I have delighted in histories, letters, records, and memoirs to do with the Royal Navy in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century; but Suzanne Stark's book has told me many, many things I did not know, and I shall keep it on an honored shelf."--Patrick O'Brian The wives and female guests of commissioned officers often went to sea in the sailing ships of Britain's Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries, but there were other women on board as well, rarely mentioned in print. Suzanne Stark thoroughly investigates the custom of allowing prostitutes to live with the crews of warships in port. She provides some judicious answers to questions about what led so many women to such an appalling fate and why the Royal Navy unofficially condoned the practice. She also offers some revealing firsthand accounts of the wives of warrant officers and seamen who spent years at sea living--and fighting--beside their men without pay or even food rations, and of the women in male disguise who served as seamen or marines. Now available in paperback, this lively history draws on primary sources and so gives an authentic view of life on board the ships of Britain's old sailing navy and the social context of the period that served to limit roles open to lower-class women.
