This is the ninth volume in the New Clinical Applications Der- matology Series. Some important topics that merit discussion are included in this book. Dr Messenger discusses clinicopathological aspects of the common disorder, alopecia areata. Dr Mendelsohn gives a straightforward, clear account of pregnancy eruptions. Dr Graham-Brown gives a comprehensive yet concise survey of that strange condition, lichen planus. Dr Graham treats us to a thorough appraisal of the enigmatic juvenile plantar dermatosis. Mr Walton takes an experienced comprehensive look at ectoparasites of import- ance to man and the concluding chapter by Dr Finlay provides a concise, helpful insight into how modern technology can aid der- matology. JULIAN VERBOV VII ABOUT THE EDITOR Dr Julian Verbov is Consultant Dermatologist to Liverpool Health Authority and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Dermatology at the University of Liverpool. This is the eighth volume in the New Clinical Applications Dermatology Series. Awareness of relationships is of prime importance in der matology. Professor Scully and Dr Porter cover the skin and mouth in a comprehensive and informative manner. Mr Peter Wright effortlessly and concisely brings the eye and the skin together. Dr C. Rowland Payne both relates and speculates on the enigma of sarcoidosis. Pro fessor Elder concludes the book with a scholarly update on porphyria and the skin. I thank all the above for their fine contributions. This volume should have widespread appeal. This, the seventh volume in the New Clinical Applications Series, has an international flavour, with contributions from Australia (Mr N.e. Davis), Great Britain (Drs A.W. Macfarlane, N.C. Smith, M.F. Spittle, J.L.Verbov), and USA (Dr M.e. Finan and Professor R.K. Winkelmann). Dr Smith discusses some common skin tumours with his character istic informative clarity. It is appropriate that an authority such as Mr Davis should discuss a tumour that has a particularly high inci dence in his own country. Dr Spittle is a recognized authority on lymphomas and she writes succinctly on their management. Dr Finan and Professor Winkelmann have extensive experience of the rare condition, necrobiotic xanthogranuloma, and Drs Macfarlane and Verbov have been involved in the management of many patients with scleromyxoedema. I am very pleased to have had the opportunity of working with the contributors and thank them most sincerely for their efforts. I hope that this volume will interest dermatologists, oncologists, pathologists, radiotherapists and surgeons. Wc have felt for some years that an atlas of paediatrie dermatology merired a place in the world dcrmatologicallitcrature. Non-dermatologists find skin conditiom difficult to describe and diagnose and this may bc cvcn mare difficult in children. Wc usually rely on the paTents for a history in childrcn, although many conclitions can bc spur dtagnoses. In this atlas wc have med to illustrare cOllditions seen regularly 111 our dinics as weIl as some seen mare rarely but which arc nevercheless important to recognize. Wc have limired the number of illustrations tn order to producc a realistically-priced book and thus it has not always becn easy to decide what to indude and whae to omu. Howevee, wc hope that wc havc produced a reasonably comprehensive work. We hope that this atlas will have a wide appeal both at home and abroad. It is a book either to read or to browse through. It is intended for senior medical students, family practitioners, and for trainees both 111 dermatology and in paediatrics. We would like it acttlally taken to skin clinics to be avatlablc for instant pcrusal, and to bc on hand in the paediatric ward. Wc have said comparatively little about treatment because this alters regularly and often varies in different centres and bccause we do not think that an atlas is the place for this."
