Forest Certification - Roots, Issues, Challenges, and Benefits (Paperback): Daniel J. Vogt, Bruce C. Larson, John C. Gordon,... Forest Certification - Roots, Issues, Challenges, and Benefits (Paperback)
Daniel J. Vogt, Bruce C. Larson, John C. Gordon, Anna Fanzeres
R1,811 Discovery Miles 18 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Forest certification has been widely accepted as a tool that would encourage industrial and non-industrial management of resources in an environmentally acceptable, socially beneficial and economically viable manner. Much has been written on certification yet five issues have been missing, which this book addresses: an analysis of the scientific basis for the certification standards; a formal and mechanistic incorporation of social and natural system sustainability as part of the standards; the rationale for the different sets of standards that are currently being used to certify governmental, industrial and non-industrial organizations; the success of the different sets of standards in assessing the environmental acceptability, social benefits and economic viability of the managed system; and, the difficulty of certifying small landowners with current protocols. Forest Certification examines the historical roots of forest certification, the factors that guide the development of certification protocols, the players involved in certification, the factors determining the customers to be certified, and the benefits of certification. The book also covers the terminology and other issues intrinsic to certification that direct the structure of standards, the similarities between indicators of different human disturbances within the ecosystem/landscape and certification standards, and, finally, a case study evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of existing certification protocols. Forest Certification is unique in its analysis of the scientific basis for the structure of the forest certification protocols. It documents the roles of human values in the development of assessment protocols but demonstrates how elements of existing protocols should be used to produce non-value based standards.

Kristiina Vogt, Toral Patel-Weynand, Maura Shelton, Daniel J. Vogt, John Gordon, …
R1,659 Discovery Miles 16 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Food, water and energy form some of the basic elements of sustainability considerations. This ground-breaking book examines and decodes these elements, exploring how a range of countries make decisions regarding their energy and bio-resource consumption and procurement. The authors consider how these choices impact not only the societies and environments of those countries, but the world in general. To achieve this, the authors review the merits of various sustainability and environmental metrics, and then apply these to 34 countries that are ranked low, medium or high on the human development index. The book assesses their resource capacities and the environmental impacts, both within and outside their country boundaries, from consuming food, water, and energy. The final section uses the lessons derived from the earlier analyses of resource consumption to explore the importance of geography, climates and sustainable management of forests and other natural resources for building resilient societies in the future.

Sexology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988): Hermann-J. Vogt Sexology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
Hermann-J. Vogt; Edited by Wolf Eicher, Goetz Kockott; Edited by (associates) Volker Herms, Reinhard Wille
R4,282 Discovery Miles 42 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sexology as a discipline has had to fight for full-fledged recognition in the scientific community. Yet special knowledge of normal and disturbed sexual behavior is expected of medical professionals, psychologists and educators alike. Based on the papers given at the 8th World Congress for Sexology in 1987, this volume gives an up-to-date discussion of the most interesting and controversial topics, such as AIDS, in the field. Contributions have been grouped under the main headings: Family Planning, Sterility and Sexuality, Erectile Dysfunction, Sexuality in the Elderly and in Marriage, Transsexualism, Sexual Therapy, and Sexuality and Illness, and include items of historical interest as well as transcultural comparisons.

Electricity Pricing - Engineering Principles and Methodologies (Hardcover): Lawrence J. Vogt Electricity Pricing - Engineering Principles and Methodologies (Hardcover)
Lawrence J. Vogt
R5,199 Discovery Miles 51 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the advent of the Smart Grid revolutionizes how homeowners and businesses purchase and manage power, electricity pricing is becoming more complicated and intricate than ever before, while the need for more frequent rate revisions remains a primary issue in the field. A timely and accessible guide for the new industry environment, Electricity Pricing: Engineering Principles and Methodologies helps those involved in both the engineering and financial operations of electric power systems to "get the money right" while ensuring reliable electric service at a fair and reasonable cost. Explores both the business functions and engineering principles associated with electricity pricing Examining pricing approaches and opportunities, this book presents tools, viewpoints, and explanations that are generally not found in contemporary literature. It clarifies valuable analysis techniques, realistic examples, and unique lessons passed along from those inside the industry. This "how to do it" guide fosters a multidisciplinary understanding that integrates information, methodologies, and techniques from accounting, economics, engineering, finance, and marketing. Detail-oriented but still mindful of the big picture, this book examines the complex relationship between electricity, customers, and service providers in relation to pricing. Electricity Pricing also: Presents mathematical methods and techniques used to establish electricity prices, determine cost causation, and evaluate pricing structures and mechanisms Explores ways to translate and integrate cost elements into practical pricing structures Details how engineering concepts are used to apportion production, delivery, and associated costs to determine cost of service and to support all aspects of ratemaking strategy, design, analysis, and decision making This comprehensive professional reference addresses theory but remains grounded in no-nonsense practical applications. It is dually suited to introduce newcomers to the technical principles and methodologies of electricity pricing and provide veterans with a valuable consolidation of advanced tools for pricing analysis and problem solving. This volume features up-to-date information on the geometric parameters of free inorganic and organic polyatomic molecules. Coverage takes into account all experimental methods for the determination of quantitative structural data of free molecules. The data obtained by these methods have been critically evaluated and compiled. They are presented separately for each molecule, together with a computer-drawn schematic figure of the structure.

Michael L Johns, Einar O. Fridjonsson, Sarah J. Vogt, Agnes Haber
R5,367 Discovery Miles 53 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There has been a recent surge in hardware developments with respect to mobile NMR and MRI systems, from which novel applications are starting to emerge. These comparatively low cost systems allow either for more routine use of NMR and MRI, generally for material quality control, or they allow for the analysis of samples whose size and shape precludes conventional NMR and MRI application. This book will, for the first time, summarise these recent hardware developments, highlight the challenges facing mobile and generally low-field NMR and MRI and describe various applications. Including chapters on commercial applications in well logging and food content measurements, the broad appeal of this book will fill a gap in the literature for NMR spectroscopists, analytical chemists and all those involved in measurement science in both industry and academia.
