Robin Williams, Peter Dinklage and Mila Kunis star in this comedy drama directed by Phil Alden Robinson. Henry Altmann (Williams), a cynical and curmudgeonly Brooklynite, undergoes a drastic transformation when he is mistakenly told by Dr. Sharon Gill (Kunis) he only has 90 minutes to live. Desperate to make amends with the people closest to him before he dies, he leaves the doctor's surgery frantically and sets off on a path of redemption. Meanwhile, Sharon, who has realised her mistake but has become aware of a potentially life-threatening brain aneurysm, tries to track Henry down to get him into care.
1911. The plots of eighty-eight operas, grand, romantic, and light, actively in the repertoire of the producing managers within the last few years, are retold here in clear, concise form. Data relative to the history, composer, first production, and cast of characters of each opera are included. The work is designed both for opera-goers and for those living outside of the large cities who wish to have a knowledge of the standard productions.
Elizabeth I as Icon examines how the image and memory of the queen has been used and viewed in the 400 years since her death. Beginning with how Elizabeth created her iconic status during her reign, the book goes on to explore ways in which this image has evolved over the years. Walker shows that centuries of social, cultural and political agenda have been given public appeal by the use of the dead queen's image, and looks at her representation within children's literature, the suffragette movement, the two world wars, and within popular culture, including the Hollywood film Elizabeth.
Throughout the book, you will find that no topics are off-limits, as Walker discusses racism, pop culture, religious dependence, controversial sports figures, the "n-word," hip hop, women's issues, and other topics that have been swept under the rug for so long. With such debatable issues featured, Walker offers in-depth interviews with persons of high credential and/or experience to contribute to the book's legitimacy through a "Conversation For Clarity." Several persons include Darryl Hunt, Terrie M. Williams, Dr. Peter Salovey, Nikki Giovanni, and others that will prove influential to this book's credibility. Reminiscent of a Familiar Face will illustrate to the present generation, and those past, of the necessary resilience that one must possess in order to transition from merely talking about solutions to actually contributing to the change they want to see.
The De concordia, published by Juan Luis Vives in 1529 and dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, is a comprehensive analysis of the social and political problems which were then afflicting Europe. It is the only such analysis undertaken by any of the Renaissance humanists. The De concordia merits a much more important place in Vives' oeuvre than scholars have hitherto given it. It is structured around the Augustinian concept of concordia and its antithesis, discordia. As such, it is an explicit attempt to understand current history in metaphysical terms. Vives' intention is not to give strategic or tactical advice to Charles V, but to examine the general disorder of Europe with a view to determining its fundamental nature and significance. This is the first critical edition of the De concordia and the first English translation.
Clifford W. Brown, Jr. and Robert J. Walker outline and analyze the entire Anderson/Lucey platform. The book includes the original Program of the Anderson/Lucey National Unity Campaign; a summary of the platform--Rebuilding a Society that Works: An Agenda for America; and the Budget Impact Statement which outlines the full financial implications of Anderson's proposals. Brown and Walker, who participated in the writing of the platform, discuss contemporary political platforms and differentiate the Anderson/Lucey platform from those of the major political parties in 1980 in an informative introduction. They also briefly describe the Anderson campaign, focusing on Anderson's rise to national attention, the role of the research department that produced the platform, the process of writing it, and its reception by the national news media.
An accessible and impartial survey of the positions of the Republican and Democratic parties on the most pressing environmental issues of our time, from climate change and wilderness preservation to air and water pollution. Today's Environmental Issues: Democrats and Republicans presents a unique perspective on party politics—one that impartially identifies similarities and differences regarding an array of topics ranging from fracking, sustainability, and pesticides to logging and noise pollution. Essays provide both historical information and up-to-date coverage of partisan opinions on today's environmental concerns. Written for upper level high school students, undergraduates, and general audiences interested in environmental issues and partisan viewpoints, this book enables readers to better understand the origins, details, differences, and commonalities of partisan opinions surrounding today's environmental concerns. Each environmental issue is unique with its own set of concerns and impacts, particularly when viewed from a party perspective. By examining a breadth of issues from the party viewpoint, readers can understand how the parties could work together or in opposition, depending on the environmental issue—and that the parties may not always be polar opposites on every issue, a characterization that is often portrayed in the media. Each essay includes a sidebar that presents a quick look at the party line, individuals who have shaped opinion or policy, or key court decisions.
Golf Course Management & Construction presents a comprehensive summary and assessment of technical and scientific research on the environmental effects of turfgrass system construction and maintenance. Although the book focuses on golf courses, it also discusses turfgrass systems for residential and commercial lawns, parks, and greenways. The book is an excellent introduction to the concepts of nonpoint source environmental impacts of turfgrass management for turfgrass scientists and specialists, landscape and golf course architects, turfgrass system and golf course developers, golf course superintendents, environmental scientists, and land-use regulators.
Father Leslie Walker's classic translation of Machiavelli's "Discourses" has long been acknowledged as the best available English language version of this seminal work in political theory. Yet it has been unavailable for several years. Much more than a translation, the introductory volume of "The Discourses of Machiavelli" is a landmark in literature. The second volume contains notes, tables, and indexes. Together, they comprise the fullest and probably the best scholarly edition in any language. "The Discourses of Machiavelli" will be a necessary addition to any library with an interest in Renaissance studies or political theory. |
