In 1982 the Kanazawa Institute of Technology Library Center
inaugurated an international seminar program and invited noted
scholars from all over the world to participate. This volume brings
together distinguished papers presented over the past ten years.
Thirty-three papers organized into five broad subject
areas--research libraries in the Twenty-first century; information
access in the new era; new technology, new media, and library
buildings; library education; preservation of research materials;
the technological university library; and managing knowledge in the
twenty-first century--deal with topics considered to be of greatest
interest to those involved with the future evolution of research
libraries.
The mind of Edmund Burke has attracted the attention of countless
political theorists, historians, and biographers. Nonetheless, one
aspect of Burke's thinking has been neglected: his perspective on
international relations. This book seeks to address that gap, by
analysing Burke's reaction to the international events of his
century. The book argues that the tension between Burke's
constitutionalism and crusading is ultimately reconciled by his
broader conception of international legitimacy and order. It is
only by widening the definition of international theory to include
domestic as well as international politics that one can resolve
this tension in Burke's theory and arrive at a richer understanding
of the nature of international order, both historically and today.
Covering state-of-the-art technologies and a broad range of
practical applications, the Third Edition of Gene Biotechnology
presents tools that researchers and students need to understand and
apply today's biotechnology techniques. Many of the currently
available books in molecular biology contain only protocol recipes,
failing to explain the principles and concepts behind the methods
outlined or to inform the reader of possible pitfalls in the
methods described. Filling these gaps, this book: Discusses a wide
variety of approaches, from very basic methods to the latest, most
sophisticated technologies Contains clearly detailed, step-by-step
protocols with helpful troubleshooting tips Addresses the needs of
researchers in academic and commercial environments Guides graduate
students in designing, implementing, and evaluating experimental
projects. Each chapter covers the principles underlying methods and
techniques, and includes step-by-step descriptions of each
protocol, notes, tips, and a troubleshooting guide. The book
includes sections on how to write a research paper for publication
in English-language journals, how to protect research discoveries
and inventions via patents, and practical methods of
bio-calculation. Written by a team of internationally recognized
scientists, Gene Biotechnology presents protocols as well as clear
and simple explanations of the key principles and concepts behind
the methods. It is a single, logically organized source for the
most important new methodologies. This unique resource provides the
tools to help ensure success in contemporary molecular and cellular
biology research.
Mixed Realism is about how we interact with media. Timothy J. Welsh
shows how videogames, like novels, both promise and trouble
experiences of "immersion." His innovative methodology offers a new
understanding of the expanding role of virtuality in contemporary
life. Today's wired culture is a mixed reality, conducted as
exchanges between virtual and material contexts. We make balance
transfers at an ATM, update Facebook timelines, and squeeze in
sessions of Angry Birds on the subway. However, the "virtual" is
still frequently figured as imaginary, as opposed to "real." The
vision of 1990s writers of a future that would pit virtual reality
against actual reality has never materialized, yet it continues to
haunt cultural criticism. Our ongoing anxiety about immersive media
now surrounds videogames, especially "shooter games," and manifests
as a fear that gamers might not know the difference between the
virtual world and the real world. As Welsh notes, this is the
paradox of real virtuality. We understand that the media-generated
virtualities that fill our lives are not what they represent. But
what are they if they are not real? Do they have presence,
significance, or influence exceeding their material presence and
the user processes that invoke them? What relationships do they
establish through and beyond our interactions with them? Mixed
Realism brims with fresh analyses of literary works such as Truman
Capote's In Cold Blood and Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves,
along with sustained readings of controversial videogames such as
Super Columbine Massacre and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Continually connecting the dots between surprising groupings of
texts and thinkers, from David Foster Wallace to the cult-classic
videogame Eternal Darkness and from Cormac McCarthy to Grand Theft
Auto, it offers a fresh perspective on both digital games and
contemporary literature.
The challenges of fire management are formidable and growing more
complex. The Nation has diverse landscapes, demographics, and
social values; and because of this, a national strategy must
address these differences. This book addresses the wildland fire
management challenges across America with a focus on providing the
framework for a strategic effort to restore and maintain resilient
landscapes, create fire-adapted communities, and respond to
wildfires. Additionally, this book examines the general science
available for a risk-based approach to fire and fuels management
and suggests analysis that may be applied at multiple scales to
inform decision-making and trade-off analysis.
This book will show you how to identify and promote a specialty. A
specialist position will set you apart from your competition and
help you grow your business in ways no generalist can. Whether
you're a small to mid-sized business that's been around for years
or an entrepreneur preparing to launch your business, the St.
Bernard Principle is worth considering. It's an opportunity to
position your business as a specialist and leave generalists back
in the pack.
