NMR at Very High Field (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991): J. B Robert NMR at Very High Field (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)

In recent years several improvements have been made in the manufacturing of resistive, superconducting and hybrid mag nets. Condensed matter physicists are nowadays doing ex periments in steady magnetic fields of up to 30 Tesla. But the field homogenity {/B}, required in a volume of the order of a 3 few cm is usually several orders of magnitude less severe than the one which is needed for high resolution NMR. Over the last 30 years, with each generation of new high resolution NMR spectrometers, from 100 MHz up to 600 MHz, taking advan tage of the increase in sensitivity and resolution, new areas of research have been opened in chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry. The generation of the 20 Tesla supercon ducting magnets is coming. Thus one may seriously start to consider high resolution NMR at 1 GHz. The purpose of this volume is to examine some of the advantages which can be obtained at such high frequencies and some of the problems we shall be facing. An important aspect of NMR at high field which is not presented in this volume concerns the design of the magnet. The building of a superconducting magnet, producing a field 10 3 higher than 20 T, with a field homogeneity IlB/B 10-, in a cm volume still remains today in 1990 a major challenge. Reliability Problems: General Principles and Applications in Mechanics of Solids and Structures (Paperback, 1991): F. Casciati,... Reliability Problems: General Principles and Applications in Mechanics of Solids and Structures (Paperback, 1991)
F. Casciati, J.B. Roberts
R1,588 Discovery Miles 15 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this volume is to present to researchers and engineers working on problems concerned with the mechanics of solids and structures, the current state of the development and application to procedures for assessing the reliability of a system. Particular attention is paid to their use in the analysis of complex engineering systems. The topics covered reflect the need to integrate, within the overall methodology, statistical methods for dealing with uncertain parameters and random excitation with the development of a suitable safety indexes and design codes. The basic principles of reliability theory, together with current standard methodology, including a consideration of the operational, economic and legal aspects of reliability assurance, is reviewed, together with an introduction to new developments, such as the application of expert systems technology. Damage accumulation predictions, with applications in seismic engineering are also covered.

BUNCOM, OREGON

Buncom is the last remaining Ghost Town in Southern Oregon. Located 20 miles southwest of Medford near the confluence of Sterling Creek and the Little Applegate River, Buncom was first settled by gold miners in the late 1850s and 1860s. Later, it was the supply center for the farmers, ranchers and loggers living in the Little Applegate Valley. Today, its abandoned buildings remain as a symbol of a simpler past, and a focus for the rural residents who live nearby.

"Buncom: Crossroads Station" relates the history of this typical rural Oregon community from its beginning to the present. In addition, it places local events in the context of the outside world. Even in their peaceful isolation, Buncom's pioneers--like those in other communities--were affected and influenced by the trends and forces that were shaping the globe.

Both authors live at Buncom. Connie Fowler writes for regional and local publications. J.B. Roberts is a rancher.

The Buncom Historical Society, publisher of this book, is a non-profit Oregon corporation dedicated to preserving the remaining buildings at Buncom and their history. Its membership is made up of nearby residents and others who care about Buncom as a symbol of our past.
