Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before."

1. We begin by giving a simple example of a partial differential inequality that occurs in an elementary physics problem. Sell Hans Weinherger PREFACE The papers in this volume were presented at a workshop on homogenization of differential equations and the determination of effective moduli of materials and media, primarily in the context of continuum theory. These areas are closely linked to a variety of phenomena, such as the elastic and dielectric responses of composites, and the effective properties of shales and soils. For instance, the ability to predict the effective stiffness response of a composite across a broad range of frequencies allows its performance under given circumstances to be assessed by means of nondestructive testing. A fundamental mathematical tool is homogenization, the study of partial differential equations with rapidly varying coefficients or boundary conditions. The recent alliance of homogenization with optimal design has stimulated the development of both fields. The presentations at the workshop emphasized recent advances and open questions.

These lecture notes by very authoritative scientists survey recent advances of mathematics driven by industrial application showing not only how mathematics is applied to industry but also how mathematics has drawn benefit from interaction with real-word problems.
The famous David Report underlines that innovative high technology depends crucially for its development on innovation in mathematics. The speakers include three recent presidents of ECMI, one of ECCOMAS (in Europe) and the president of SIAM.

This is a reprinting of a book originally published in 1978. At that time it was the first book on the subject of homogenization, which is the asymptotic analysis of partial differential equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients, and as such it sets the stage for what problems to consider and what methods to use, including probabilistic methods. At the time the book was written the use of asymptotic expansions with multiple scales was new, especially their use as a theoretical tool, combined with energy methods and the construction of test functions for analysis with weak convergence methods. Before this book, multiple scale methods were primarily used for non-linear oscillation problems in the applied mathematics community, not for analyzing spatial oscillations as in homogenization. In the current printing a number of minor corrections have been made, and the bibliography was significantly expanded to include some of the most important recent references. This book gives systematic introduction of multiple scale methods for partial differential equations, including their original use for rigorous mathematical analysis in elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic problems, and with the use of probabilistic methods when appropriate. The book continues to be interesting and useful to readers of different backgrounds, both from pure and applied mathematics, because of its informal style of introducing the multiple scale methodology and the detailed proofs.

These six volumes - the result of a ten year collaboration between the authors, two of France's leading scientists and both distinguished international figures - compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. Since the publication in 1924 of the "Methoden der mathematischen " "Physik" by Courant and Hilbert, there has been no other comprehensive and up-to-date publication presenting the mathematical tools needed in applications of mathematics in directly implementable form. The advent of large computers has in the meantime revolutionised methods of computation and made this gap in the literature intolerable: the objective of the present work is to fill just this gap. Many phenomena in physical mathematics may be modeled by a system of partial differential equations in distributed systems: a model here means a set of equations, which together with given boundary data and, if the phenomenon is evolving in time, initial data, defines the system. The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible for the first time to caluclate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way. Every fact of technical and industrial activity has been affected by these developments. Modeling by distributed systems now also supports work in many areas of physics (plasmas, new materials, astrophysics, geophysics), chemistry and mechanics and is finding increasing use in the life sciences.
