Mrs. Darling dozes in the nursery as her children sleep. Suddenly,
the window bursts open, and Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow
up, flies in. Seeing a grown-up in the room, he gnashes his perfect
set of pearly baby teeth at her. The children’s nurse, Nana, a
Newfoundland dog, gallops in and chases the boy out the window,
slamming it shut with her paws. Peter escapes just in time, but his
shadow is not so lucky. Now it is trapped in the nursery, and
everyone knows he will come back for it. When he does, Wendy, John,
and Michael will begin the greatest adventure any siblings have
ever had. Peter whisks the children off to Neverland to meet the
Lost Boys, Tinker Bell the fairy, and Princess Tiger Lily.
Together, they wage fierce battles against the evil Captain Hook
and his dreaded band of ruthless pirates, whose only goal in life,
it seems, is to destroy Peter and his friends. Â
The magical Peter Pan comes to the night nursery of the Darling
children, Wendy, John and Michael. He teaches them to fly, then
takes them through the sky to Never-Never Land, where they find
wolves, Mermaids and... Pirates. The leader of the pirates is the
sinister Captain Hook. His hand was bitten off by a crocodile, who,
as Captain Hook explains 'liked me arm so much that he has followed
me ever since, licking his lips for the rest of me'. After lots of
adventures, the story reaches its exciting climax as Peter, Wendy
and the children do battle with Captain Hook and his band. This
edition also includes Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens which is the
magical tale that first introduces Peter Pan, the little boy who
never grows any older. He escapes his human form and flies to
Kensington Gardens, where all his happy memories are, and meets the
fairies, the thrushes, and Old Caw the crow. The fairies think he
is too human to be allowed to stay in after Lock-out time, so he
flies off to an island which divides the Gardens from the more
grown-up Hyde Park - Peter's adventures, and how he eventually
meets Mamie and the goat, are delightfully illustrated by Arthur
Rackham.

The character of Peter Pan first came to life in the stories J. M.
Barrie told to five brothers -- three of whom were named Peter,
John, and Michael. Peter Pan is considered one of the greatest
children's stories of all time and continues to charm readers one
hundred years after its first appearance as a play in 1904.
'To die will be an awfully big adventure.' Peter Pan, the boy who
refused to grow up, is one of the immortals of children's
literature. J. M. Barrie first created Peter Pan as a baby, living
in secret with the birds and fairies in the middle of London, but
as the children for whom he invented the stories grew older, so too
did Peter, reappearing in Neverland, where he was aided in his epic
battles with Red Indians and pirates by the motherly and
resourceful Wendy Darling. Peter Pan has become a cultural icon and
symbol for escapism and innocence, remaining popular with both
children and adults. In this collected edition, Robert
Douglas-Fairhurst brings together five of the main versions of the
Peter Pan story, from Peter Pan's first appearance in The Little
White Bird, to his novelisation of the story, the stage version,
and unrealised silent film script. This edition contains a lively
introduction, detailed explanatory notes, original illustrations,
and appendices that include Barrie's coda to the play that was only
performed once.

'All children, except one, grow up.' It was Friday night. Mr and
Mrs Darling were dining out. Nana had been tied up in the backyard.
The poor dog was barking, for she could smell danger. And she was
right - this was the night that Peter Pan would take the Darling
children on the most breath-taking adventure of their lives, to a
place called Neverland, a strange country where the lost boys live
and never grow up, a land with mermaids, fairies and pirates - and
of course the terrible, evil, Captain Hook. Peter Pan is
undoubtedly one of the most famous and best-loved stories for
children, an unforgettable, magical fantasy which has been enjoyed
by generations. The Penguin English Library - collectable general
readers' editions of the best fiction in English, from the
eighteenth century to the end of the Second World War.
