It began long before man ever took his first breath. Somewhere beyond the Great Barrier of our own existence, an uprising broke out in Heaven as Immortals fought for the very Kingdom of God. In the end the rebellion was quelled. The traitors were tried and sentenced. But though the battle had been won, the war had just begun. Now that same war that started so long ago could threaten the delicate balance between good and evil. A storm is coming and the planet Augusta will soon be put to the fire. Unable to stop the coming battle, the KaRel family is swept right into the thick of it as one of them is given the greatest weapon imaginable...the Fire of God. But can a mere mortal be trusted with such power? And what of the mysterious Dark Angel? Could he hold the key to the galaxy's salvation or its utter demise? In the distant future the battle will be decided, as a long forgotten faith is born again.
Widely used in civil, mechanical and automotive engineer-ing since the early 1980s, multilayer rubber bearings have been used as seismic isolation devices for buildings in highly seismic areas in many countries. Their appeal in these applications comes from their ability to provide a component with high stiffness in one direction with high flexibility in one or more orthogonal directions. This combination of vertical stiffness with horizontal flexibility, achieved by reinforcing the rubber by thin steel shims perpendicular to the vertical load, enables them to be used as seismic and vibra-tion isolators for machinery, buildings and bridges. Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation collates the most important information on the mechanics of multilayer rubber bearings. It explores a unique and comprehensive combination of relevant topics, covering all prerequisite fundamental theory and providing a number of closed-form solutions to various boundary value problems as well as a comprehensive historical overview on the use of isolation. Many of the results presented in the book are new and are essential for a proper understanding of the behavior of these bearings and for the design and analysis of vibration or seismic isolation systems. The advantages afforded by adopting these natural rubber systems is clearly explained to designers and users of this technology, bringing into focus the design and specification of bearings for buildings, bridges and industrial structures. This comprehensive book: * includes state of the art, as yet unpublished research along with all required fundamental concepts; * is authored by world-leading experts with over 40 years of combined experience on seismic isolation and the behavior of multilayer rubber bearings; * is accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kelly The concise approach of Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers/practitioners in structural and mechanical engineering departments, in particular those working in seismic and vibration isolation.
Some of the more interesting elements in the chemistry of life are less commonly occuring ones such as nickel and molybdenum. This volume elucidates the chemistry of these elements in important enzymes and also explores the chemistry of elements that do not normally occur in biological molecules, but are useful in probing their structure and function. Topics include: Acquisition and transport of Ni. Mechanistic action of Ni in a wide variety of enzymes. Multielectron redox systems involving pterins in proteins. Chemistry of the pterin and flavin complexes of Mo, Fe, Cu and Ru ions. Replacement of iron in transferrin by a number of other metal ions. Use of polypyridyl complexes of ruthenium and other transition metals as probes of nucleic acid structure through photochemical reactions.
This unique publication outlines the development of legal theory from pre-Roman times to the twentieth century. It aims to relate the evolution of legal theory to parallel developments in political history, and accordingly offers the reader an account of relevant contemporaneous political, religious, and economic events. Each chapter commences with a general historical background for the relevant period, and discusses how political events and political and legal theory are both related to one another and occasionally influence one another. No other English publication aims to anchor legal theory to contemporary general history in this way, shunning the more conventional approach to legal theory via the study of 'traditions' or 'schools', and it is hoped that this study will provide a much-needed basic text for students of jurisprudence, legal theory and politics.
Fallen Guardian, Festulantus, betrayed by his henchman Jake and captured by the three Recruits Harry, Bethany and Abigail, is now imprisoned by the Guardians. Their mentor Mrs Regnad (Arbiter second tier) is on the track of Jake who has escaped with Parthinia Impson's lifebox and the Paradoxery, a book of malevolent Jinxes, banned many centuries ago. From his lair deep in the Swiss mountains Jake is using the Paradoxery for his own evil ends. The three Recruits, some unsuspecting friends and the two rescued dogs Jasper and Violet are tasked with penetrating his hideout, recovering the Lifebox and destroying the Paradoxery before Jake brings war and destruction to the planet.
Harry, Bethany and Abigail continue their training to become Recruits under the not very watchful eyes of their mentor Mrs Suo Regnad (Arbiter Third Tier) who changes her accent as often as she changes her name. The three have been chosen by the Guardians to keep the Spirit Gateways safe as if they are destroyed the natural world will not regenerate. This time Mr Hobson (Arbiter First Tier) arranges a student exchange for the three to a famous public school, Elvingsborough College in order that they can recapture Festulantus, an evil fallen Guardian now living in nearby Diablerie Castle. . Festulantus has found a way of extracting evil from wicked people and transferring it to other, who under his influence, will carry out criminal acts which benefit him and which also cause environmental disasters. Harry, Abigail and Bethany with the help of some unsuspecting friends must frustrate his plans.
In the thirteenth century the Guardians gave the three families in the tiny hamlet of Oakhobgate special powers to protect the Spirit Gateway in Lycan's Forest. The spirits ensured that the natural world was safe, for without them regeneration was impossible. Eight hundred years later the descendants of the original families are still charged with this role. Three new recruits Harry, Abigail and Bethany are being trained in the Jinx by the redoubtable but eratic Mrs Suo Regnad (pseudonym). Because of unfortunate incidents with new recruits which featured hungry lions and grumpy bears she may need to attend a retraining programme (although as she said, "Nobody actually died"). First they will have to overcome Festulantus (an evil fallen Guardian) who intends to destroy the Forest Gateway. The story includes political intrigue, bribery, kidnapping, problems with Einstein's gravitational wave theories and the development of three very different twelve year olds.
The Lost Treasure is a thriller about four young adolescents who come together to solve a deadly mystery. The spirit of a long-dead pirate seeks his 300-year-old buried treasure through the possessed body of a diabolical descendant. It's up to Bobby Holmes from England, his American cousin Brenda Watson, and a couple of unlikely heroes, one of whom has Asperger Syndrome, to traverse the darkened halls of a school at night, and the suffocating caves of a haunted mountain, to save each other and come out alive
