Fallen Guardian, Festulantus, betrayed by his henchman Jake and captured by the three Recruits Harry, Bethany and Abigail, is now imprisoned by the Guardians. Their mentor Mrs Regnad (Arbiter second tier) is on the track of Jake who has escaped with Parthinia Impson's lifebox and the Paradoxery, a book of malevolent Jinxes, banned many centuries ago. From his lair deep in the Swiss mountains Jake is using the Paradoxery for his own evil ends. The three Recruits, some unsuspecting friends and the two rescued dogs Jasper and Violet are tasked with penetrating his hideout, recovering the Lifebox and destroying the Paradoxery before Jake brings war and destruction to the planet.

Harry, Bethany and Abigail continue their training to become Recruits under the not very watchful eyes of their mentor Mrs Suo Regnad (Arbiter Third Tier) who changes her accent as often as she changes her name. The three have been chosen by the Guardians to keep the Spirit Gateways safe as if they are destroyed the natural world will not regenerate. This time Mr Hobson (Arbiter First Tier) arranges a student exchange for the three to a famous public school, Elvingsborough College in order that they can recapture Festulantus, an evil fallen Guardian now living in nearby Diablerie Castle. . Festulantus has found a way of extracting evil from wicked people and transferring it to other, who under his influence, will carry out criminal acts which benefit him and which also cause environmental disasters. Harry, Abigail and Bethany with the help of some unsuspecting friends must frustrate his plans.

Because of unfortunate incidents with new recruits which featured hungry lions and grumpy bears she may need to attend a retraining programme (although as she said, "Nobody actually died"). First they will have to overcome Festulantus (an evil fallen Guardian) who intends to destroy the Forest Gateway. The story includes political intrigue, bribery, kidnapping, problems with Einstein's gravitational wave theories and the development of three very different twelve year olds.
