German Literature under National Socialism (Paperback): J.M. Ritchie German Literature under National Socialism (Paperback)
J.M. Ritchie
R1,127 Discovery Miles 11 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1983, this study starts with an exploration of proto-Nazi literature in the early 20th Century and pursues later developments up to the arrival of fully-fledged National Socialism. Not only literature within Germany is covered; after 1933 republican writers forced into exile for racial as well as political reasons rejected the anti-Semitic 'barbarism' of National Socialism and developed a powerful brand of anti-fascist literature in countries around the world. This 'exile' literature is covered in depth, both for its outstanding individual figures like Brecht and Mann as well as for the general phenomenon of exile. Attention is particularly focused on those non-Nazis who remained in Germany as 'inner emigres' forming a resistance literature. One area of resistance also highlighted in the book is the Spanish Civil War in which many writers fought.

Volume V deals with the problems of turnover in the nervous system. "Turnover" is defined in different ways, and the term is used in different contexts. It is used rather broadly in the present volume, and intentionally so. The turnover of macromolecules is only one aspect; here "turnover" in dicates the simultaneous and coordinated formation and breakdown of macromolecular species. The complexities of cerebral protein turnover are shown in a separate chapter dealing with the synthesis of proteins, in another on breakdown, and in still another on the relationship of these two (showing how the two halves of turnover are controlled). The fact that most likely the two halves of protein turnover, synthesis and breakdown, are separated spatially and the mechanisms involved are different further emphasizes the complexity of macromolecular turnover. "Turnover" is used in a different context when the turnover of a cycle is discussed; but here again a number of complex metabolic reactions have to be interrelated and controlled; some such cycles are discussed briefly in this volume, additional cycles have been discussed with metabolism, and some cycles still await elucidation or discovery.

Plays Volume 1 (Paperback): Georg Kaiser Plays Volume 1 (Paperback)
Georg Kaiser; Translated by B.J. Kenworthy, Rex Last, J.M. Ritchie

"These five plays provide an excellent introduction to Kaiser's vision of the regeneration of man, which he illustrated in his works by a total paring down of detail, penetrating to the core of the matter and revealing man's true potential. In From Morning to Midnight the cashier, downtrodden victim of the capitalist system, turns bank robber in order to test the power, freedom and happiness that money can bring. His grand gesture of setting himself and others free turns into an odyssey of disillusion and ends in his violent death. The unique stage technique employed by Kaiser is as challenging today as it was when the play was first performed. The Burghers of Calais has always been considered Kaiser's greatest play and the "classic" of Expressionist drama. In it, Kaiser exploits the non-naturalistic technique of Expressionism. The play embraces vast expansiveness and total concentration, stylized gesture and lengthy monologues."
