Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Both personal and scholarly in tone, this book encourages readers
to think theologically, ethically, and politically about the
statement that declares: "God loves diversity and justice." The
multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-disciplinary, and
multi-gendered identities of the eleven contributors and two
respondents deepen the conversation. It considers questions such
as: Do we affirm or challenge this theological statement? Do we
concentrate on "God" in our response or do we interrogate what
diversity and justice mean in light of God's love for diversity and
justice? Alternatively, do we prefer to ponder the verb, to love,
and consider what it might mean for society if people really
believed in a divinity loving diversity and justice? Of course,
there are no easy and simple answers whether we consult the Sikh
scriptures, the Bible, the Qur'an, the movies, the Declaration of
Human Rights, or the transgender movement, but the effort is
worthwhile. The result is a serious historical, literary, cultural,
and religious discourse that fends against intellectually rigid
thought and simplistic belief systems across the religious
spectrum. In our world in which so much military unrest and
violence, economic inequities, and religious strife prevail, such a
conversation nurtures theological, ethical, and political
possibilities of inclusion and justice.
This book explores the tenuous existence of seafarers, divided
between their time on the ocean and their residence in sailortown
economies geared to exploit them. Particular attention is given
both to the contribution of seafarers as a global workforce into
the nineteenth century, and to their help in creating vibrant
multicultural enclaves in port cities worldwide. In addition,
research explores the scandalized opinions of outside observers,
challenging ideas about public behavior and relationships.
Sailortown myths persisted far into the twentieth century, to the
detriment of older waterfront districts and their residents, and
readers will find this book is invaluable in casting new light on
forgotten communities, whose lives bridged urban, maritime and
global histories.
This book is the result of a conference on arithmetic geometry, held July 30 through August 10, 1984 at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, the purpose of which was to provide a coherent overview of the subject. This subject has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity due in part to Faltings' proof of Mordell's conjecture. Included are extended versions of almost all of the instructional lectures and, in addition, a translation into English of Faltings' ground-breaking paper. ARITHMETIC GEOMETRY should be of great use to students wishing to enter this field, as well as those already working in it. This revised second printing now includes a comprehensive index.

Algebraic groups play much the same role for algebraists as Lie
groups play for analysts. This book is the first comprehensive
introduction to the theory of algebraic group schemes over fields
that includes the structure theory of semisimple algebraic groups,
and is written in the language of modern algebraic geometry. The
first eight chapters study general algebraic group schemes over a
field and culminate in a proof of the Barsotti-Chevalley theorem,
realizing every algebraic group as an extension of an abelian
variety by an affine group. After a review of the Tannakian
philosophy, the author provides short accounts of Lie algebras and
finite group schemes. The later chapters treat reductive algebraic
groups over arbitrary fields, including the Borel-Chevalley
structure theory. Solvable algebraic groups are studied in detail.
Prerequisites have also been kept to a minimum so that the book is
accessible to non-specialists in algebraic geometry.
This volume is the result of a (mainly) instructional conference on
arithmetic geometry, held from July 30 through August 10, 1984 at
the University of Connecticut in Storrs. This volume contains
expanded versions of almost all the instructional lectures given
during the conference. In addition to these expository lectures,
this volume contains a translation into English of Falt ings'
seminal paper which provided the inspiration for the conference. We
thank Professor Faltings for his permission to publish the
translation and Edward Shipz who did the translation. We thank all
the people who spoke at the Storrs conference, both for helping to
make it a successful meeting and enabling us to publish this
volume. We would especially like to thank David Rohrlich, who
delivered the lectures on height functions (Chapter VI) when the
second editor was unavoidably detained. In addition to the editors,
Michael Artin and John Tate served on the organizing committee for
the conference and much of the success of the conference was due to
them-our thanks go to them for their assistance. Finally, the
conference was only made possible through generous grants from the
Vaughn Foundation and the National Science Foundation."
These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Advanced
Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design
Methodologies, held in Arles, France, in May 1993, and organized by
the ESPRIT Working Group 6018 CHARME-2and the Universit de
Provence, Marseille, in cooperation with IFIP Working Group 10.2.
Formal verification is emerging as a plausible alternative to
exhaustive simulation for establishing correct digital hardware
designs. The validation of functional and timing behavior is a
major bottleneck in current VLSI design systems, slowing the
arrival of products in the marketplace with its associated increase
in cost. From being a predominantly academic area of study until a
few years ago, formal design and verification techniques are now
beginning to migrate into industrial use. As we are now witnessing
an increase in activity in this area in both academia and industry,
the aim of this working conference was to bring together
researchers and users from both communities.
