Crooked Letter i offers a collection of first-person nonfiction narratives that reflect the distinct 'coming out' experiences of a complex cross-section of gay, lesbian, and transgendered Southerners from all walks of life and at different stages in their lives. There is the Appalachian widower who, following the death of his wife, decides it's time to tell his church community. There is the young man who left his hometown as a girl, returning hesitant but hopeful for his grandmother's love. There is the adolescent girl who refuses to surrender her soul to Jesus because she is not yet certain of her own beliefs. There is the well-mannered Southern gentleman who hopes his blueberries and biscuits will help ease the awkwardness of coming out to his elderly neighbor. There are the ones who survived the frequent bar raids, arrests, and beatings. But, there is also the first kiss, and the first love. The experiences represented here pivot around a central theme—finally finding language to understand one's identity, and then discovering we were never the only ones. Revealing a vibrant cross-section of Southerners, the writers of these narratives have in common the experience of being Southern and different, but determined against all odds.
This book provides an array of concise solutions to the wide variety of problems that are faced by postproduction artists in the post process. With an application-agnostic approach, it gives proven, step-by-step methods to solving the most frequently encountered postproduction problems. Also included is access to a free, password-protected website that features application-specific resolutions to the problems presented, with fixes for working in Apple's Final Cut Studio suite, Avid's Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as other applications. Lessons are enhanced through eye-catching 4 color illustrations throughout. Solutions are provided for common audio, video, digital, editorial, color, timing and compositing problems, such as, but not limited to: automated dialogue replacement, adjusting sync, and correcting pitch turning SD into HD (and vice-versa) and restoration of old film for video removing duplicate frames, repairing corrupt frames, and anti-aliasing maintaining continuity, removing soft cuts, and troubleshooting timecodes adding vignettes, removing color casts, and legalizing color speeding shots up or slowing shots down, and smoothing timelapse reframing shots, sky replacement, and object addition or removalThe book is presented in a "cookbook" format, allowing you to reference your exact problem in the TOC or index, go to that section, and immediately implement the solution featured.
The Digital Intermediate process (DI), or conversion of film to digital bits and then back to film again, has great potential to revolutionize the postproduction process. The skill set to photochemically process a movie and pop it into a canister for the postal service to send around to all of the movie houses and the skill set to digitally master and create a file that is distributed globally via the Internet and satellites are completely different. One of these entirely new processes is that of the digital intermediate. The DI has tremendous advantages, ranging from improved quality (first "print" is as good as the last) to cost savings (no re-mastering) to digital distribution (bits and bytes: no film in canisters). The DI influences everything from on set production to the delivery of content to consumers and everything in between. Digital Intermediates for Film and Video teaches the fundamental concepts and workflow of the digital intermediate process. Covers basics of film first, and then introduces the digital world--including a tutorial on digital images, asset management, online editing, color correction, restoration, film and video output, mastering and quality control. Jack's clear and easy-to-follow explainiation of Hollywood buzz words and components facilitates the spill over to anyone who has a vested interest in the quality and cost of the movie.

The Health of Populations: Beyond Medicine uses current research and in-depth analysis to provide insights into the issues and challenges of population health; a subject of increasing concern, due largely to rapid population growth, population aging, rising costs and diminishing resources, health inequality, and the global rise in noncommunicable diseases. Reducing the global burden of disease requires prevention of disease incidence, which is achievable through reduction of exposure to primary (behavioral) and secondary (biomedical) risk factors. The 15 chapters of the book are divided into three sections that focus on the science of health, the harm of medicine, and how to achieve optimal health. By highlighting the benefits of preventing incidence of disease, this book illustrates how biomedicine needs to be repositioned form being the dominant approach in healthcare to being an adjunct to behavioral, legislative, social, and other preventive means for optimizing population health.

Contemporary Issues in Global Criminal Justice provides a holistic analysis of modern criminal justice issues, encompassing the pre-trial, investigative, and post-conviction stages of criminal justice in legal settings across the world. The contributors acknowledge and examine the vast array of challenges in global criminal justice, from the role of the International Criminal Court to policing, the integration of technology, and how marginalized groups, such as sex workers and those with addictions, are treated in the courts. With contributions from scholars in England and Wales, New Zealand, Croatia, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, and The Republic of North Macedonia, this book is not limited to one jurisdiction, and highlights that criminal justice is very much a global issue in a state of crisis. From policing to the courts, it is in urgent need of reform. Without a competent criminal justice system, justice does not exist. This book would be of interest to scholars in the legal, criminal justice, and criminology fields.
