Sidney Lumet's 1973 crime drama Serpico remains one of the most influential cop movies - alongside Al Pacino's nuanced performance in a disturbing portrait of corruption and morality in the city that never sleeps. A plainclothes street patrolman, Frank Serpico (Pacino) might be the best cop in New York, but he is unwilling to play dirty and give into police corruption of drugs, violence, and kickbacks his colleagues indulge in every day. When he decides to expose those around him, Frank finds himself a target, not just to the city's criminals, but his own peers. Shot on location and based on real events, Serpico captures the grit of New York in a way no film has rivalled, not just for its toned down realism, but also the bleakness Lumet portrays within his hometown city with brutal cynicism with frank immediacy.
Kevin Costner stars as Eliot Ness, an idealistic Treasury official who vows to bring an end to Al Capone's (Robert De Niro) corrupt hold over Prohibition-era Chicago. To this end, Ness puts together an elite team of law-enforcement officers (played by Sean Connery, Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith), and begins making bold strikes at Capone's bootlegging operation. Nevertheless, Capone's empire continues to thrive, and Ness realises that he must try a different approach. Brian De Palma directs, from a David Mamet screenplay, and Sean Connery won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his efforts.
Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin star in this classic '80s comedy directed by Martin Brest. Bounty hunter Jack Walsh (De Niro) is assigned a case that involves catching an accountant (Grodin) who has jumped bail. However, the Mafia and a rival bounty hunter are also after the same target, and when Jack catches up with him, he finds himself cast in the unlikely role of his charge's protector.
