Jahrhundert, das wahrend des Mittelalters ein bedeutender Liedtyp war und auch daruber hinaus Anklang fand. Der klassische Wachter stellt im tageliet oft eine wichtige Komponente dar, die durch dieses Zitat gut zum Ausdruck gebracht wird: Von der zinnen wil ich gen, in tagewise sanc verbern. die sich minnen tougenliche, und obe si prise ir minne wern ...] (1,1-6). Es beinhaltet die tagewise, de morgendliche Weckruf des Wachters, der das heimliche Liebespaar weckt und somit auch vor der Entdeckung schutzt. Die Tageliedsituation zeichnet sich unter anderem durch Erotik aus, welche im Minnesang sonst selten so explizit geschildert wird. Es ist bezeichnend fur die Bedeutung des Wachters, dass die Gattung mit dem Namen des Weckrufs versehen wurde, denn ursprunglich war mit tageliet oder tagewise lediglich der Morgengesang des Wachters gemeint. Erst spater dienten die Begriffe als Gattungsbezeichnung. Die Wachterfigur ist von so grosser Bedeutung, dass sie sogar zum "kennzeichnenden Element des Tageliedes" wird: das Wachterlied. Zur Analyse dieser Figur werden vier ausgewahlte Lieder der Dichter Wolfram von Eschenbach, Burggraf von Lienz, Ulrich von Lichtenstein und Steinmar eingehend betrachtet. Zusatzlich werden Querverweise auf weiter Tagelieder verwendet, um das Blickfeld auf die Wachterrolle noch auszuweiten.
