This volume analyzes ecological and socio-economic risks due to
climate change in the Himalayan mountain ecosystems, communities,
and proposes adaptation strategies and sustainability practices. In
order to better understand the potential actions required to
improve natural resource conservation and the development of
mountain people's livelihoods. The authors discuss the current
status of local knowledge system on various environmental aspects
of conservation and sustainable use of mountain resources in the
Himalaya. The book addresses the institutional capacities, gaps,
and priority areas of capacity building to strengthen policies and
governance in regard to climate change, landuse management,
biodiversity conservation, and sustainable management in the
Himalayan region. The aim of this book is to enhance coordination
building among policymakers, planners, mountain communities to
foster collaboration between different stakeholders by
understanding local perceptions of climate change as well as
variability issues, and establishing adaptation strategies to cope
with these impacts. The chapters incorporate theoretical and
applied aspects, and may serve as baseline information for the
sustainability of mountain ecosystems through the contribution of
multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary expertise from the
Himalayan region. The book will be useful for students, teachers,
and researchers working in different areas pertaining to mountain
ecosystems, as well as policymakers and planners working on issues
related to the sustainability of the mountain ecosystem.
A database management system (DBMS) is a collection of programs
that enable users to create and maintain a database; it also
consists of a collection of interrelated data and a set of programs
to access that data. Hence, a DBMS is a general-purpose software
system that facilitates the processes of defining, constructing,
and manipulating databases for various applications. The primary
goal of a DBMS is to provide an environment that is both convenient
and efficient to use in retrieving and storing database
information. It is an interface between the user of application
programs, on the one hand, and the database, on the other. The
objective of Database Management System: An Evolutionary Approach,
is to enable the learner to grasp a basic understanding of a DBMS,
its need, and its terminologies discern the difference between the
traditional file-based systems and a DBMS code while learning to
grasp theory in a practical way study provided examples and case
studies for better comprehension This book is intended to give
under- and postgraduate students a fundamental background in DBMSs.
The book follows an evolutionary learning approach that emphasizes
the basic concepts and builds a strong foundation to learn more
advanced topics including normalizations, normal forms, PL/SQL,
transactions, concurrency control, etc. This book also gives
detailed knowledge with a focus on entity-relationship (ER)
diagrams and their reductions into tables, with sufficient SQL
codes for a more practical understanding.
A Comprehensive Study of SQL - Practice and Implementation is
designed as a textbook and provides a comprehensive approach to SQL
(Structured Query Language), the standard programming language for
defining, organizing, and exploring data in relational databases.
It demonstrates how to leverage the two most vital tools for data
query and analysis - SQL and Excel - to perform comprehensive data
analysis without the need for a sophisticated and expensive data
mining tool or application. Features The book provides a complete
collection of modeling techniques, beginning with fundamentals and
gradually progressing through increasingly complex real-world case
studies It explains how to build, populate, and administer
high-performance databases and develop robust SQL-based
applications It also gives a solid foundation in best practices and
relational theory The book offers self-contained lessons on key SQL
concepts or techniques at the end of each chapter using numerous
illustrations and annotated examples This book is aimed primarily
at advanced undergraduates and graduates with a background in
computer science and information technology. Researchers and
professionals will also find this book useful.
This book traces the important role played by Prakrit language and
narrative literature in the development of Indian languages and
literature. This is considered to be the first attempt ever, by any
Indian or foreign scholar in this field. This publication has been
painstakingly, manually prepared by Dr J C Jain after a detailed
research of a wide range of Indian and foreign literary works,
which has taken several years. The manifold contributions of
Prakrit in the field of Ardhamagadhi, Sauraseni, Maharastri and
Paisachi language and literature, development of narrative
literature in Maharastri, contributions in the field of Sanskrit
poetics and drama have all been incorporated in this rare
publication. Dr Jain has considered all the traditional views of
ancient authors and grammarians and has compared them to those of
the modern times, to enable to present a clear viewpoint to the
readers.
In the post World War II era, the Mathematics Research Center (MRC)
was one of the earliest comprehensive examples of collaboration
between the government and a university. By taking a broad view of
mathematics that embraced both the pure and applied branches, the
MRC provided a model of an interdisciplinary effort that interacted
very well with the spectrum of sciences. This book deals with the
complex and challenging organizational and scientific issues that
arose in the operation of this center. When viewed abstractly,
interdisciplinary research is a good idea. Even in a broad
discipline like mathematical sciences, many scientific advances
have occurred at the interfaces of various sub-disciplines.
However, the promotion of an interdisciplinary research in an
academic environment has always been a major challenge. As the rich
experience at the MRC has clearly shown, such interdisciplinary
research crosses different intellectual cultures including science
and engineering. The book attempts an honest assessment of how
successful it was at the MRC and what attendant lessons are to be
learned. But this book is not a purely historical account of what
happened at the MRC. Rather, it uses history as a vehicle to draw
useful conclusions for current and future generation of developers,
practitioners, consumers and sponsors of applied mathematics.
