Tropical coastal deltas represent one of the most diverse and rapidly changing biophysical regions in the developing world. These deltas are home to large populated areas, are significant centres of agricultural production and industrial development, and contain fragile ecosystems that are now facing new threats as a result of expected sea-level rises associated with global warming. Focusing on the developing countries of Asia, Africa and South America, chapters explore the diverse livelihoods of people in these areas and the impact of land-water management on the environment. The main objective of this research work was to document the ethnobotanically important plants of Pabna region, located at the Northern part of Bangladesh. For this study, 5 villages from char land and 7 villages from main land area were selected and different participatory methods (structured, semi-structured interviews, informal and focus group discussion) were employed to gain access to the information. A detail survey was conducted to identify the different professional groups living in the study area. The pattern of livelihood of the local people, their professionalism and plant based traditional knowledge were also studied. In this investigation, eight different professional groups were classified and 311 plant species were documented which were widely used by the local people for different purposes in order to obtain their livelihood. This research explores that people of the study area possess a strong base of ethnobotanical knowledge by which they continue their daily life. Basically, char land people use more wild plant resources than mainland people in their daily life.

This book is organized into three chapters. Chapter one comprises a general introduction that provides review and evidences of food insecurity and nutritional outcome in Bangladesh. Chapter two represents an experience based case study on whether questionnaire-based measure from non staple foods is valid for the measurement of households with food insecurity. Chapter three represent a case study on non cereal food consumption and nutrition outcome in children and mothers (measured from the frequency of non staple food consumption). This book is designed for using in the courses that focus on food insecurity and nutritional outcome measurement in children and mothers.
