Elgar Encyclopedia of European Union Public Policy (Hardcover): Paolo R Graziano, Jale Tosun Elgar Encyclopedia of European Union Public Policy (Hardcover)
Paolo R Graziano, Jale Tosun
R7,913 Discovery Miles 79 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A holistic and extensive exploration of both the dynamic and incremental changes in EU public policy and the decision processes surrounding them, this Elgar Encyclopedia is the definitive reference work in the field of EU public policy. Unifying theoretical insights with empirical phenomena, this pioneering Encyclopedia begins by engaging with the multi-level structure of the EU's polity and identifies how this affects public policy, considering the role of various non-state actors in EU policymaking, and the concepts of Europeanization and policy diffusion. Offering a theoretical introduction to policy integration, it examines intergovernmentalism, neofunctionalism, and postfunctionalism, alongside an innovative analysis of policy styles and the effects of recent crises on EU public policy, including COVID-19 and populism. Chapters conclude by reflecting on policy implementation and dynamics, and the impact of feedback on public policies and institutions. Ultimately demonstrating that the study of public policy in the EU has produced a set of EU-specific analytical perspectives, this timely book will guide further research avenues into EU public policy for students and scholars interested in (EU) public policy, public administration and comparative politics, alongside informing the decision-making of policymakers globally. Key Features: Accessible format split into 9 thematic parts Fully cross-referenced with select bibliographies for further reading Entries written by an international and interdisciplinary group of over 90 preeminent experts in the field of public policy

Coping with Crisis: Europe's Challenges and Strategies (Paperback): Jale Tosun, Anne Wetzel, Galina Zapryanova Coping with Crisis: Europe's Challenges and Strategies (Paperback)
Jale Tosun, Anne Wetzel, Galina Zapryanova
R1,071 Discovery Miles 10 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How has the economic and financial crisis that started in 2007 affected European integration? Observers have been speculating about whether the crisis will ultimately lead to a strengthening or weakening of the European Union. This book studies the effects of the crisis on EU policy-making and institutional arrangements on one hand, and citizens' EU attitudes and political parties' electoral strategies on the other. It concludes that, at least in the short run, the crisis has overall created an opportunity for European integration rather than an obstacle. First, it has triggered events of proposed and actual far-reaching policy and institutional change. Second, negative effects on public opinion have not (yet) systematically translated into tendencies of stagnation or disintegration. The book brings together established scholars of European integration whose diverse research expertise contributes to an improved theoretical and empirical understanding of how the economic and financial crisis has affected EU policies, institutions and citizens. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

Intergenerational Transmission and Economic Self-Sufficiency (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Jale Tosun, Daniela Pauknerova,... Intergenerational Transmission and Economic Self-Sufficiency (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Jale Tosun, Daniela Pauknerova, Bernhard Kittel
R2,986 Discovery Miles 29 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

European countries have faced profound changes in family structures and family forms over the last few decades. This volume provides insights from eleven European countries with varying welfare state arrangements, exploring the extent to which the intergenerational transmission of attitudes, resources and values matter with regard to the economic self-sufficiency of young people. Drawing on in-depth interviews with three generations of family members, the contributors show how intergenerational transmission happens and what the effects of these transmission processes are. The book reveals that family members serve as role models to younger family members and influence their career and educational aspirations, and that there are specific family value orientations and parental approaches which support economic self-sufficiency in younger generations. Intergenerational Transmission of Economic Self-Sufficiency will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including social work, sociology, psychology and political sociology.

Energy Policy Making in the EU - Building the Agenda (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Jale Tosun,... Energy Policy Making in the EU - Building the Agenda (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Jale Tosun, Sophie Biesenbender, Kai Schulze
R2,356 Discovery Miles 23 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book adopts an innovative analytical approach to agenda setting by not only presenting successful cases in which energy issues were addressed by means of public policy, but by also analyzing failed attempts to make issues part of the European policy agenda. Another outstanding feature of the book is its use of the latest empirical data on a broad range of energy issues. When are energy issues likely to find their way to the agenda of European policymakers? This is the key research question guiding this collection of empirical studies, which will shed light on both successful and unsuccessful attempts to include energy issues in the European agenda. The multi-level political system of the European Union represents a particularly fruitful setting for addressing this question due to the multiple institutional access points it provides for different groups of actors. The book has three key benefits. First, it provides a theory-informed analysis of agenda setting processes in general and in the European Union in particular. Second, it presents an overview of the most important and emerging dimensions on European energy policy, and third, it helps to develop a research agenda for future research in the field.

Risk Regulation in Europe - Assessing the Application of the Precautionary Principle (Paperback, 2012): Jale Tosun Risk Regulation in Europe - Assessing the Application of the Precautionary Principle (Paperback, 2012)
Jale Tosun
R1,732 Discovery Miles 17 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The publication aims to familiarize students of public policy with the precautionary principle, which plays a vital role in the European Union's approach toward regulating risks. The precautionary principle contends that policy makers should refrain from actions having a suspected risk of causing harm to the public and/or the environment. However, the precautionary principle only provides guidance to policy makers but does not prescribe specific policy responses. Therefore, there should be variation in the way the principle is applied. Furthermore, precautionary measures are, in principle, of a provisional nature, suggesting that they are likely to be subject to changes over time. This book is thus interested in shedding light on how the precautionary principle is put into practice and to what extent precautionary measures become modified. Empirically, it focuses on how the EU has regulated the use of growth hormones in meat production, the cultivation of genetically modified corn and the use of Stevia-based sweeteners in foods and beverages. The main theoretical argument advanced by this study is that the way in which the original regulatory standards were formulated affects whether and how they are changed. By placing particular emphasis on the relevance of scientific evidence for the (re-)definition of precautionary measures, the book is expected to appeal to both academics and practitioners.

Policy Styles and Policy-Making - Exploring the Linkages (Paperback): Michael Howlett, Jale Tosun Policy Styles and Policy-Making - Exploring the Linkages (Paperback)
Michael Howlett, Jale Tosun
R1,217 Discovery Miles 12 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Richardson et al.'s respected and seminal Policy Styles in Western Europe (1982) shed valuable light on how countries tend to establish long-term and distinctive ways to make policies that transcend short-term imperatives and issues. This follow-up volume updates those arguments and significantly expands the coverage, consisting of 16 carefully selected country-level case studies from around the world. Furthermore, it includes different types of political regimes and developmental levels to test more widely the robustness of the patterns and variables highlighted in the original book. The case studies - covering countries from the United States, Canada, Germany and the UK to Russia, Togo and Vietnam - follow a uniform structure, combining theoretical considerations and the presentation of empirical material to reveal how the distinct cultural and institutional features of modern states continue to have implications for the making and implementation of public policy decisions within them. The book is essential reading for students and scholars of public policy, public administration, comparative politics and development studies.

Public Policy - A New Introduction (Paperback, 2nd edition): Christoph Knill, Jale Tosun Public Policy - A New Introduction (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Christoph Knill, Jale Tosun
R1,185 R1,077 Discovery Miles 10 770 Save R108 (9%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

A comprehensive introduction to public policy and the policy cycle, the fully revised second edition of this popular textbook offers a practical guide to the topic while remaining underpinned by cutting-edge research. Bringing together analysis of classic works alongside the most recent developments in the field, this book is guided by the following three crucial questions: What is public policy? Who participates in making and putting public policy in practice as well as in assessing its success? And when and how does public policy change over time? In answering these questions, the book covers everything from the central institutions and actors of policy-making to implementation, evaluation and governance. Drawing on examples from across the world, the new edition expands on themes that were previously covered only marginally, including the underexplored connection between public policy and political economy, as well as placing more emphasis on climate change and practical advice on doing policy analysis. For undergraduate or postgraduate students studying on courses focussed on public policy or the policy cycle or process, this textbook is the essential guide to the subject. The book is also suited for those studying public policy in the context of politics or public management and administration. New to this Edition: - A revised conclusion containing guidance on how to do policy analysis. - Extended discussion of climate policy and politics. - Consideration of the effects of Brexit, the rise of populism and the impact of the loss of faith in globalization for international organizations. - More on policy process theories, comparative public policy, the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of public policy studies and new methodologies such as the evaluation of policy measures by means of social media data.

Environmental Policy in Chile and Mexico (Paperback): Jale Tosun Environmental Policy in Chile and Mexico (Paperback)
Jale Tosun
R1,295 Discovery Miles 12 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Has economic integration lowered the level of environmental standards in developing countries? Many observers think so. But in this study Jale Tosun argues that this need not necessarily be the case. As the case studies on Chile and Mexico reveal, trade interlinkage with developed countries can yield a positive impact on the level of environmental policy setting. At the implementation stage, however, developing countries try to evade enhanced regulatory burdens through reduced enforcement activities. Tosun explains this behaviour by developing a two-level interaction model, which integrates the concepts of regulatory competition, international cooperation, and conditionality. She shows that more stringent environmental protection standards in developing countries mainly result from conditionality pressure, whereas regulatory competition can still become effective during implementation. As a result, the progress of environmental policy in low-regulating countries must be regarded with some caution. The book combines a comprehensive theoretical model with original empirical data, turning it into a valuable resource for students of public policy analysis and practitioners alike.

Gerbert Kraaykamp, Jale Tosun, Zeynep Cemalcilar
R909 R858 Discovery Miles 8 580 Save R51 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Work and work experiences rank highly among human values. Work provides structure, supplies financial opportunities, and shapes both career aspirations and personal satisfaction. Attitudes toward work, moreover, influence society's welfare and operations. This volume of The ANNALS investigates what socialization processes and qualities of parents, schools, and work places are important in the development of work attitudes, paying particular attention to intergenerational transmission of work attitudes and values. By looking at the determinants of work values and their concurrent effects on politics, the economy, and personal well-being in a number of European countries, this volume offers an improved understanding of work values and their significance to the social sciences, and illuminates how such improved knowledge can influence public policy.
