European countries have faced profound changes in family structures and family forms over the last few decades. This volume provides insights from eleven European countries with varying welfare state arrangements, exploring the extent to which the intergenerational transmission of attitudes, resources and values matter with regard to the economic self-sufficiency of young people. Drawing on in-depth interviews with three generations of family members, the contributors show how intergenerational transmission happens and what the effects of these transmission processes are. The book reveals that family members serve as role models to younger family members and influence their career and educational aspirations, and that there are specific family value orientations and parental approaches which support economic self-sufficiency in younger generations. The publication aims to familiarize students of public policy with the precautionary principle, which plays a vital role in the European Union's approach toward regulating risks. The precautionary principle contends that policy makers should refrain from actions having a suspected risk of causing harm to the public and/or the environment. However, the precautionary principle only provides guidance to policy makers but does not prescribe specific policy responses. Therefore, there should be variation in the way the principle is applied. Furthermore, precautionary measures are, in principle, of a provisional nature, suggesting that they are likely to be subject to changes over time. This book is thus interested in shedding light on how the precautionary principle is put into practice and to what extent precautionary measures become modified. Empirically, it focuses on how the EU has regulated the use of growth hormones in meat production, the cultivation of genetically modified corn and the use of Stevia-based sweeteners in foods and beverages. Has economic integration lowered the level of environmental standards in developing countries? Many observers think so. But in this study Jale Tosun argues that this need not necessarily be the case. As the case studies on Chile and Mexico reveal, trade interlinkage with developed countries can yield a positive impact on the level of environmental policy setting. At the implementation stage, however, developing countries try to evade enhanced regulatory burdens through reduced enforcement activities. Tosun explains this behaviour by developing a two-level interaction model, which integrates the concepts of regulatory competition, international cooperation, and conditionality. She shows that more stringent environmental protection standards in developing countries mainly result from conditionality pressure, whereas regulatory competition can still become effective during implementation. As a result, the progress of environmental policy in low-regulating countries must be regarded with some caution.
