The Roman Remains of Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley is the third in a series of companion guides. The only specialist guidebook to the region, it provides context to many sites that deserve to be better known, some only recently conserved for the public. There are plenty of places to chose from: fifty-four treated at length plus fourteen shorter entries. There is an extended chapter dealing with the historical background and two feature sections. The book is easy to use as there are a large number of maps, plans and colour photographs. To ensure accuracy, the author personally followed aqueduct routes, visited hidden temples, admired ramparts, and visited all the museums. Through his writing a visit is transformed into an experience.
This book provides a thorough, area by area companion to the
region's wealth of monuments, excavations and artefacts, from Paris
and Boulogne-sur-Mer to Strasbourg and Lyon. Over ninety sites are
treated in detail, including major attractions such as the parc
archeologique in Lyon and the amphitheatre at Autun, numerous local
museums and secluded rural excavations.
This book offers a comprehensive guide book in English devoted to the Roman remains of southern France. The book embraces Provence, the Riviera and Languedoc-Roussillon from the Alps to the Pyrennees. It ranges from sites such as the extensive Roman remains at Vienne in the Rhone valley, the great aqueduct of Pont du Gard, the beautiful ruined temple of Vernegues, to the striking museum collections of Arles and Avignon. It provides an extensive description of the major and many of the less well-known sites. Greek and the local Gallic contributions to Roman civilization are given proper attention. The book is organized in a straightforward , alphabetical reference format; the text not only helps the visitor identify important or distinctive remains, but also provides an evocative and atmospheric picture of many of the places; all sites are set in a historical and cultural context, while regional and local maps make finding sites easy (and most of these have plans); photographs and illustrations should help the visitor identify material; interesting museum exhibits are pointed out.
