Snakeheads (Pisces, Channidae) - A Biological Synopsis and Risk Assessment: Usgs Circular 1251 (Paperback): United U. S.... Snakeheads (Pisces, Channidae) - A Biological Synopsis and Risk Assessment: Usgs Circular 1251 (Paperback)
United U. S. Department of the Interior; Walter R. Courtenay, James D. Williams
R609 Discovery Miles 6 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Snakeheads (family Channidae) are airbreathing freshwater fishes containing two genera, Channa with 26 species native to Asia, Malaysia, and Indonesia; and Parachanna with 3 species native to tropical Africa. Some snakeheads are small, reaching about 17 centimeters, but most are much larger, the largest reported to be 1.8 meters in length. All are considered thrust predators with most being piscivorous as adults. A few of the smaller snakeheads and colorful juveniles of some larger ones have been available to hobbyists through the aquarium fish trade. Several species are highly valued as food fishes within parts of their native ranges, especially in Asia where they are an important part of capture fisheries and aquaculture. Because of these uses by humans, introductions far beyond native ranges have occurred. One Asian snakehead has been established in Oahu, Hawaii, since before 1900. Another species was discovered established in southeastern Florida in 2000, and a third in a pond in Maryland in 2002. Others have been captured from natural waters of the United States without evidence of reproduction and likely represent released aquarium fishes. That snakeheads at or near sexual maturity were being sold alive in ethnic food markets raised fears that they could be introduced into novel waters. These concerns led to this study on the biology of snakeheads. A risk assessment is included that examines environmental and related aspects of snakehead introductions.

How Science Works - Teaching and Learning in the Science Classroom (Hardcover): James D. Williams How Science Works - Teaching and Learning in the Science Classroom (Hardcover)
James D. Williams
R5,224 Discovery Miles 52 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title introduces how science works, the way science is now taught in secondary schools, to all teachers - whether trainee, recently qualified or established. "How Science Works (HSW)" provides the opportunity for pupils not only to understand the facts of science, but also to develop as critical thinkers and to become creative problem-solvers. James Williams introduces "HSW," looking at the background to this approach to teaching science and draws on the current curriculum to explore strategies for effectively introducing aspects of HSW into lessons across all the science disciplines. Each chapter includes reflective tasks to use individually or as part of group discussions, research tasks, further reading and associated web links.

This book is a comprehensive identification guide to the 222 species of fishes in Florida's fresh waters. Each species is presented with color photographs, key characteristics for identification, comparisons to similar species, habitat descriptions, and dot distribution maps. Florida's unique mix of species includes some of the world's favorite sport fishes, the Tarpon and Largemouth Bass. This guide also features three species native only to Florida-the Seminole Killifish, Flagfish, and Okaloosa Darter-and the smallest freshwater fish in North America, the Least Killifish. Ranging from the panhandle to the Everglades, their habitats include springs, creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, marshes, and man-made canals. As Florida's human population grows, the state's freshwater environments are being changed in ways that threaten its native fishes. This book provides important information on the diversity, distribution, and environmental needs of both native and nonindigenous species, helping us monitor and take care of Florida's water and its aquatic inhabitants.

The Decline in Educational Standards - From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly (Hardcover): James D. Williams The Decline in Educational Standards - From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly (Hardcover)
James D. Williams
R2,646 Discovery Miles 26 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Decline in Educational Standards: From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly is about the "commodification" of education and the factors that have changed education from a public good into a "commodity" over the last 50 years. When we look at today's education, we see that academic standards in public education have been declining for decades even as education funding has reached nearly a trillion dollars per year to fund such failed programs as No Child Left Behind and Common Core. Simultaneously, tuition and fees at public universities have increased nearly 2000 percent over the last 30 years, and student loan debt is now a staggering $1.5 trillion. Quite simply, education has become big business. This book examines the various issues associated with the commodification of education, especially neoliberalism and privatized Keynesianism-what they are, how they developed, and how they have affected education and public policy. It argues that neoliberalism and the related socioeconomic shift to "debt-based consumerism" are at the center of commodification, leading to a significant decline in the exchange value of a college degree. It also argues that we cannot understand the changes in our public and higher education systems without examining the historical, social, economic, and political factors that have essentially created an education system that is significantly different from what it was in the not so distant past.

Freshwater Mussels of Florida is the only comprehensive, illustrated encyclopedia of all recorded species of mussels in the state on Florida. An exhaustive guide to all aspects of the freshwater mussel fauna in Florida, Freshwater Mussels of Florida covers the ecology, biology, distribution, and conservation of the many species of bivalve mollusks in the Sunshine State. In the past three decades, researchers, the public, businesses that depend on wildlife, and policy makers have given more attention to the threatened natural diversity of the Southeast, including freshwater mussels. This compendium meets the increasingly urgent need to catalog this imperiled group of aquatic organisms in the United States. Each entry in this definitive guide provides a detailed description and multiple depictions of the species as well as select characteristics of its soft anatomy and miscellaneous notes of interest. Individual distribution maps pinpoint the historical and present occurrence of each bivalve species and are just one component of the rich set of 307 mussel and habitat photographs, seventy-four maps, and thirteen tables that illustrate the book. Of particular interest are remarkable electron micrographs of glochidia, the specialized larval life history stage parasitic upon fishes. Freshwater Mussels of Florida will be of lasting value to state and federal conservation agencies as well as other government and nongovernment entities that manage aquatic resources in Florida. The research provides a key baseline for future study of Florida mussels. The survey results in this guide, along with extensive reviews of historical mussel collections in natural history museums, provide a complete picture of the Florida mussel fauna, past and present.

Freshwater Mussels of Alabama and the Mobile Basin in Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee (Hardcover, Infinifilm): James D.... Freshwater Mussels of Alabama and the Mobile Basin in Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee (Hardcover, Infinifilm)

This is a comprehensive accounting of the richest mussel fauna in the U.S.Alabama rivers and waterways are home to the largest and most diverse population of freshwater mussel species in the nation, roughly 60 per cent of U.S. mussel fauna. The Mobile River Basin, which drains portions of Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi waterways, also contains diverse mussel populations. However, many of these species have been significantly depleted in the last century due to habitat alteration (river damming, channelization, siltation), pollution, and invasive species, and many more are in imminent danger of extinction. The authors offer encyclopedic entries on each of the 178 mussel species currently identified in Alabama and the Mobile River Basin - the scientific and common names; a morphological description as well as color photographs of the shell appearance; analysis of the soft anatomy; information about ecology, biology, and conservation status; and, a color distribution map. With an extensive glossary of terms and full index, plus additional material on the archaeological record, a history of commercial uses of mussels, and the work of significant biologists studying these species, this volume is a long overdue and invaluable resource, not only for scholars of aquatic biology and zoology but also conservationists interested in the preservation of ecological diversity and protection of inland environments.
