This book deals with the practice of Optical Radiation Measurements with introductory material to introduce the topics discussed. It will be most useful for students, scientists and engineers working in any academic, industrial or governmental projects related to optical radiation. The book contains chapters that treat in detail the procedures and techniques for the characterization of both sources and detectors to the highest degree of accuracy and reliability. It has a chapter devoted specifically to optical measurements of laser sources and fiberoptics for communication and a chapter devoted to uncertainty in measurement and its treatment with real examples of optical measurements. The book contains introductory materials that will allow a newcomer to radiometry to develop the expertise to perform exacting and accurate measurement. The authors stress the various causes of uncertainty in each phase of a measurement and thus allow for users to arrive at a correct assessment of their uncertainty of measurement in their particular circumstance.
. Authors are from the Standards laboratories of AUSTRALIA, CANADA, ENGLAND, GERMANY and the USA.
. Latest techniques and practice of laboratory measurements to achieve the highest accuracy in the use of sources or detectors.
. Unique illustrations of the apparatus and measurement techniques.
. Practical measurement examples of calibration with full uncertainty analysis.
. Comprehensive treatment of optical standards such as sources, detectors and radiometers.
. A complete chapter on laser power measurements and standards for fiber optic measurements

Christiad (Hardcover): Marco Girolamo Vida Christiad (Hardcover)
Marco Girolamo Vida; Translated by James Gardner
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Marco Girolamo Vida (1485-1566), humanist and bishop, came to prominence as a Latin poet in the Rome of Leo X and Clement VII. It was Leo who commissioned his famous epic, the "Christiad, " a retelling of the life of Christ in the style of Vergil, which was eventually published in 1535. It was by far the most popular Christian epic of the Renaissance, appearing in almost forty editions before 1600. It was translated into many languages, including Croatian and Armenian, and was widely imitated by vernacular poets such as Abraham Cowley and John Milton. This translation, accompanied by extensive notes, is based on a new edition of the Latin text.

The Louvre - The Many Lives of the World's Most Famous Museum (Paperback, Main): James Gardner The Louvre - The Many Lives of the World's Most Famous Museum (Paperback, Main)
James Gardner
R334 Discovery Miles 3 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Almost nine million people from all over the world flock to the Louvre in Paris every year to see its incomparable art collection. Yet few, if any, are aware of the remarkable history of that location and of the buildings themselves, and how they chronicle the history of Paris itself-a fascinating story that historian James Gardner elegantly tells for the first time. Before the Louvre was a museum, it was a palace, and before that a fortress. But much earlier still, it was a place called le Louvre for reasons unknown. People had inhabited that spot for more than 6,000 years before King Philippe Auguste of France constructed a fortress there in 1191 to protect against English soldiers stationed in Normandy. Two centuries later, Charles V converted the fortress to one of his numerous royal palaces. After Louis XIV moved the royal residence to Versailles in 1682, the Louvre inherited the royal art collection, which then included the Mona Lisa, given to Francis by Leonardo da Vinci; just over a century later, during the French Revolution, the National Assembly established the Louvre as a museum to display the nation's treasures. Subsequent leaders of France, from Napoleon to Napoleon III to Francois Mitterand, put their stamp on the museum, expanding it into the extraordinary institution it has become. With expert detail and keen admiration, James Gardner links the Louvre's past to its glorious present, and vibrantly portrays how it has been a witness to French history - through the Napoleonic era, the Commune, two World Wars, to this day - and home to a legendary collection whose diverse origins and back stories create a spectacular narrative that rivals the building's legendary stature.

Latin Poetry (Hardcover): Girolamo Fracastoro Latin Poetry (Hardcover)
Girolamo Fracastoro; Translated by James Gardner
R804 Discovery Miles 8 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One of the great medical authorities of the early sixteenth century, Girolamo Fracastoro (1478-1553) was also a prominent Neo-Latin poet. This volume includes his famous didactic poem Syphilis in three books, which gave the name to the disease and contains the first poetical description of Columbus's discovery of America. Also included are a short Biblical epic, the Joseph, and the Carmina, a collection of shorter poetry in various metres. This volume presents an updated edition of all the Latin texts, two previously unpublished short poems, and the first complete translation into English of Fracastoro's Latin poetry.
