This beautifully illustrated story is an adaptation of the Welsh
legend of Cantre'r Gwaelod, the lost area of Wales which
disappeared beneath the sea. This drowned land was once a pleasant
and prosperous kingdom, its low-lying fields protected from the
waves by a high sea wall. But only Mererid, the storm child, knows
that the tide-gates are failing and the next storm will breach the
wall. As clouds and ravens gather overhead, she must race to save
her friends and the kingdom before it's too late... TreeTops

Imre is one of the first openly gay American novels with a happy
ending. Described by the author as ""a little psychological
romance,"" the narrative follows two men who meet by chance in a
cafe; in Budapest, where they forge a friendship that leads to a
series of mutual revelations and gradual disclosures. With its
sympathetic characterizations of homosexual men, Imre's 1906
publication marked a turning point in English literature. This
edition includes material relating to the novels origins,
contemporary writings on homosexuality, other writings by
Prime-Stevenson, and a contemporary review.

Amidst Africa's myriad wildlife highlights, Savute must rank as one
of the most spectacularly enigmatic: a river that rarely flows, a
marsh that metamorphoses from wasteland to watery paradise and,
towering over them both, a silent parade of prehistoric hills.
Within these habitats lies a complex web of wildlife whose
fascinating tales are vividly brought to life in this book - a
stunning visual journey that will delight, astonish and inform.

SAINT BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX. Delivered before the Morningside
Literary Institute February 1875. Ladies and Gentlemen, I invite
you to-night, to go back with me 750 years, and to spend an hour in
endeavouring to estimate the character and to sympathise with the
feelings and actions f of probably the greatest mind of the twelfth
/ century, and certainly one of the greatest minds of all time.
Back 750 years It carries us to the central period of the middle
ages ? to the very depths of what we somewhat superciliously call
the Dark Ages, ofttimes forgetting that these centuries which now
seem lost in the shadows of the past, had once lights all their
own; that each, as it flitted over earth, showed a varied
illumination, ?now ruddy with the lurid glare of passion and of
war, with which, alas, our own country is only too familiar, ? and
now pale yet piercing with Scholastic refinements and subtilties
which our own age cannot equal alfid can scarcely understand. The
middle ages What strange scenes and pictures do not the words
recall ? The fortalice of the half savage Baron and the mean huts
of his degraded serfs. The proud pomp and spiritual power of the
haughty churchman, before which the strength of kings, and the
might of feudalism was fain to kneel. The chivalry of Europe
drained time after time to furnish forth the armies of the
Crusaders. Religious excitements and revivals passing like prairie
fires over Europe, and compared with which modern revivals, even
the wildest, seem but the coldest marsh gleams. Strange and
terrible diseases and epidemics, and plagues both bodily and
mental, that mowed down millions as with the scythe of destruction.
The spotted plague and the black death and the sweating sickness.
The dancing mania, the barkingmania. The werewolf and the...

Edward Taylor Fletcher was a nineteenth-century literary figure
almost completely forgotten by history. Poet, travel writer,
essayist, surveyor, philologist, and translator, Fletcher shared
many characteristics with the great literary figures of the time.
Yet his writing represents a significant departure from his
contemporaries and a close reading of his work reshapes our
understanding of the Canadian long poem and the cultural values of
Canadian poetry. Fletcher spoke English, French, German, Italian,
and other modern languages fluently and he studied or translated
literary works in Icelandic, Finnish, Polish, Hebrew, Greek, Latin,
and Sanskrit (among several others). His poetry interweaves
Canadian landscapes with modern and ancient traditions of the East
and West and integrates allusions and innovations from several
different literary traditions including the Kalavela, the
Mahabharata, and the Poetic Edda. By recuperating Fletcher's
nineteenth century works, James Gifford uncovers a unique Canadian
literary voice who explored content, style, and concerns unlike the
popular colonial narratives of his time.
