The Measurement of Health - Concepts and Indicators (Hardcover, New): James Larson The Measurement of Health - Concepts and Indicators (Hardcover, New)
James Larson
R2,148 Discovery Miles 21 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How can the various indicators of health, available through vital statistics, government publications, private surveys and other sources, be measured? This and other questions are brought to light in James Larson's important study of concepts in the health measurement of individuals and populations. This book is intended to provide a backdrop for future research into determining health care needs, while allowing for more efficient allocation of scarce resources by planners and administrators. The first chapter defines health by using five models, the two major ones being the medical and the holistic. The medical model is the absence of disease and disability, and the holistic generally defines health as physical, mental, and social well-being. Chapters two and three discuss the statistical measurement of mortality and morbidity (illness or disability) by government and other agencies. International health measurement is the focus of the fourth chapter, which includes descriptions of World Health Organization activities in planning for health impovements worldwide and the lack of accurate health measurement in developing countries. Chapter five discusses United States national health statistics gathering, while chapter six analyzes the less sophisticated vital statistics methodologies used at the state and local levels. In the final chapter, Larson proposes indicators for international, national, state, and local levels, given the best possible data for health measurement. The Measurement of Health will be of great value to health statisticians, scholars interested in health policy, students in courses concerning research methods in health, health services administrators, and health proessionals.

This volume includes a lengthy introduction by Gerald James Larson, which discusses the history of Samkhya and its philosophical contours overall. The remainder of the book includes summaries in English of all extant Sanskrit texts of the system. Originally published in 1987. Interpreting across Boundaries - New Essays in Comparative Philosophy (Hardcover): Gerald James Larson, Eliot Deutsch Interpreting across Boundaries - New Essays in Comparative Philosophy (Hardcover)
Gerald James Larson, Eliot Deutsch
R3,754 Discovery Miles 37 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is a "state-of-the-art" assessment of comparative philosophy written by some of the leading practitioners of the field. While its primary focus is on gaining methodological clarity regarding the comparative enterprise of "interpreting across boundaries," the book also contains new substantive essays on Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and European thought. The contributors are Roger T. Ames, William Theodore de Bary, Wing-tsit Chan, A. S. Cua, Eliot Deutsch, Charles Hartshorne, Daya Krishna, Gerald James Larson, Sengaku Mayeda, Hajime Nakamura, Raimundo Panikkar, Karl H. Potter, Henry Rosemont, Jr., Ben-Ami Scharfstein, Ninian Smart, Fritz Staal, and Frederick J. Streng. Comparative or cross-cultural philosophy can be seen as a relative newcomer to the field of philosophy. It has its antecedents in the emergence of comparative studies in nineteenth-century European intellectual history, as well as in the sequence of East-West Philosophers' Conferences at the University of Hawaii, which began in 1939. This book will prove to be of great significance in helping to define a field that is only now becoming fully self-conscious, methodologically and substantively, about its role and function in the larger enterprises of philosophy and comparative studies. "It was to St. Peter that our Lord entrusted the Keys of the Kingdom and vowed that his faith would never fail. For centuries the Petrine office has been the bulwark of truth against heresies and ideologies which threaten the integrity of the Church's faith. In War Against the Papacy, James Larson explains why the apparent auto-demolition of the papacy under the post-conciliar popes has not changed this fundamental reality - and why attacks against the papacy, even in the name of tradition, betray a lack of trust in Christ's promise to St. Peter. James Larson is a Catholic author whose notable contributions include articles in the magazine Christian Order as well as the voluminous website War Against Being (www.waragainstbeing). He well-researched essays advocate a return to God using the golden wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas as our lodestar. War Against the Papacy is his first print book.

And he's just discovered that Winnie's robot holds the key to his formula. Joined by Cavalcade, the family cat, and Amulet, a cowardly homeless dog who dreams of being part of the family, too, Winnie and Winslow must set aside their differences and pool their resources if they have any hope of stopping the villainous alchemist before he kills anyone. Religion and Personal Law in Secular India - A Call to Judgment (Paperback): Gerald James Larson Religion and Personal Law in Secular India - A Call to Judgment (Paperback)
Gerald James Larson
R529 Discovery Miles 5 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Though a directive principle of the constitution, a uniform civil code of law has never been written or instituted in India. As a result, in matters of personal law the segment of law concerning marriage, dowry, divorce, parentage, legitimacy, wills, and inheritance individuals of different backgrounds must appeal to their respective religious laws for guidance or rulings. But balancing the claims of religious communities with those of a modern secular state has caused some intractable problems for India as a nation. Religion and Personal Law in Secular India provides a comprehensive look into the issues and challenges that India faces as it tries to put a uniform civil code into practice.
