Mathematics and Mechanics of Granular Materials (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): James M. Hill, A.P.S. Selvadurai Mathematics and Mechanics of Granular Materials (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
James M. Hill, A.P.S. Selvadurai
R2,908 Discovery Miles 29 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. At some stage almost every industrial process involves a particulate material, and it is usually the cause of the disruption to the smooth running of the process. In the natural environment, understanding the behaviour of particulate materials is vital in many geophysical processes such as earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. This book is a collection of current research from some of the major contributors in the topic of modelling the behaviour of granular materials. Papers from every area of current activity are included, such as theoretical, numerical, engineering and computational approaches. This book illustrates the numerous diverse approaches to one of the outstanding problems of modern continuum mechanics.

Mathematics of Particle-Wave Mechanical Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): James M. Hill Mathematics of Particle-Wave Mechanical Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)

Despite successes of modern physics, the existence of dark energy and matter is indicative that conventional mechanical accounting is lacking. The most basic of all mechanical principles is Newton's second law, and conventionally, energy is just energy whether particle or wave energy. In this monograph, Louis de Broglie's idea of simultaneous existence of both particle and associated wave is developed, with a novel proposal to account for mass and energy through a combined particle-wave theory. Newton's second law of motion is replaced by a fully Lorentz invariant reformulation inclusive of both particles and waves. The model springs from continuum mechanics and forms a natural extension of special relativistic mechanics. It involves the notion of "force in the direction of time" and every particle has both particle and wave energies, arising as characteristics of space and time respectively. Dark matter and energy then emerge as special or privileged states occurring for alignments of spatial forces with the force in the direction of time. Dark matter is essentially a backward wave and dark energy a forward wave, both propagating at the speed of light. The model includes special relativistic mechanics and Schroedinger's quantum mechanics, and the major achievements of mechanics and quantum physics. Our ideas of particles and waves are not yet properly formulated, and are bound up with the speed of light as an extreme limit and particle-wave demarcation. Sub-luminal particles have an associated superluminal wave, so if sub-luminal waves have an associated superluminal particle, then there emerges the prospect for faster than light travel with all the implications for future humanity. Carefully structured over special relativity and quantum mechanics, Mathematics of Particle-Wave Mechanical Systems is not a completed story, but perhaps the first mechanical model within which such exalted notions might be realistically and soberly examined. If ultimately the distant universe become accessible, this will necessitate thinking differently about particles, waves and the role imposed by the speed of light. The text constitutes a single proposal in that direction and a depository for mathematically related results. It will appeal to researchers and students of mathematical physics, applied mathematics and engineering mechanics.

Modelling and Mechanics of Carbon-based Nanostructured Materials sets out the principles of applied mathematical modeling in the topical area of nanotechnology. It is purposely designed to be self-contained, giving readers all the necessary modeling principles required for working with nanostructures. The unique physical properties observed at the nanoscale are often counterintuitive, sometimes astounding researchers and thus driving numerous investigations into their special properties and potential applications. Typically, existing research has been conducted through experimental studies and molecular dynamics simulations. This book goes beyond that to provide new avenues for study and review.

Differential Equations and Group Methods for Scientists and Engineers (Hardcover, New): James M. Hill Differential Equations and Group Methods for Scientists and Engineers (Hardcover, New)
James M. Hill
R4,497 Discovery Miles 44 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Differential Equations and Group Methods for Scientists and Engineers presents a basic introduction to the technically complex area of invariant one-parameter Lie group methods and their use in solving differential equations. The book features discussions on ordinary differential equations (first, second, and higher order) in addition to partial differential equations (linear and nonlinear). Each chapter contains worked examples with several problems at the end; answers to these problems and hints on how to solve them are found at the back of the book. Students and professionals in mathematics, science, and engineering will find this book indispensable for developing a fundamental understanding of how to use invariant one-parameter group methods to solve differential equations.

Alaska probably one of the Greatest Gold Producers of Lode and Placer Gold in North America. The Fairbanks District was one of the major contributors to this. At the time of the writing of this book 1930, nearly 6 billion dollars in gold had been taken out of this district at today's prices. The amount is much greater now. This book covers over 100 Lodes, descriptions, Geology, production, history and more. Geological Survey Bulletin 849-B.
