adapted, taking the form of letters written by the therapist in the
voice of a child who is asking for advice about interpersonal or
emotional problems. The child in the letter is asking for guidance
from the participants in the group. These letters were devised and
written for the purpose of structuring responses in group
psychotherapy, allowing the participants to address relevant issues
for them individually and at the group level. The children in the
groups had previously experienced difficulty discussing these
issues spontaneously. Hence the 'Dear Group' letter format was
born. The children did not know that the therapist had written the
letters.

IV deutung herauszufinden und schlieBlich sie als Wegweiser bei der
Behandlung zu verwenden. Diese Artder Beobachtung deckte viel neue
und unerwartete Tatsaehen auf und machte die Anwendung besonderer
Methoden, sowie eine iiber viele Jahre sich erstreckende
Beobachtung einzelner Falle notwendig. Um die Resultate fur die
Praxis brauchbar zu machen, hielt ich es fUr notwendig, sehr weit
ins Detail zu gehen, und es war sehwierig, den Text zu gleicher
Zeit kurz und iibersichtlich zu gestalten. Eine gewisse Summe von
Einzelheiten ist notig, und doch wiirde zu viel davon ermiidend und
vielleicht verwirrend wirken, daher wurden Kontroversen vermieden
und die Beobach tungen mit der Erklarung versehen, die mir am
vernunftigsten schien. Manche Untersuchungsmethoden, welche in den
Lehrbuchern einen hervor ragenden Platz einnehmen, sind nur kurz
oder gar nicht mitgeteilt, nicht weil ich ihren Nutzen in gewissen
Fallen nicht anerkenne, sondern weil ich mich mit Gegenstanden
befasse, die bei der taglichen Untersuchung der Patienten von
praktischem Werte sind. Es mag so erscheinen, als ob ein unnotiger
Auf wand von Aufmerksamkeit auf Einzelheiten gewandt worden sei,
von denen viele nur durch eigene Apparate erkannt werden konnen.
Aber um iiberzeu gend zu wirken, muBten Beweise beigebracht werden.
Viele von den scheinbar unbedeutendsten Zeichen, wie die kleinsten
Unterschiede in der GroBe des Puls schlages, oder eine leichte
Verzogerung zwischen Vorhof- und Kammersystole sind wirklich von
vitaler Wichtigkeit, indem sie, Veranderungen offenbaren, die
erwiesenermaBen durch ganz bestimmte Herzaffektionen bedingt sind."
