This book is about a boy taking the first steps towards being a young man with an independent perspective. It takes place over a two week period on a walkabout with his great uncle. At the same time his parents get to enjoy a break from their parenting and their effort of introducing the boy to the idea of holding an independent perspective. The story takes place several hundred years in the future after humans have once again chosen to spend their future by violently destroying what they have. It is a time when governmental influence is minimal and can be distant if desired. It is a time when Constitutional freedoms can be openly lived on an individual level. The constraining hierarchies of organized religions and an aggressive government with police and military support have been found to be wanting and negative to individual development. The walkabout takes place in the Rocky Mountains of the Western United States and from early to mid-June. Descriptions of the plant and animal life found along the way are from the author's experiences but are not meant to be from one locale. The various thoughts and perspectives of the characters in the book are shared by the author. This book contains the presentations given during the 9th International Workshop on Railway Noise (IWRN9) which took place in Munich/Feldafing, Germany, on 4th to 8th September 2007. This workshop was organised by the Acoustics and Vibration Department of DB Systemtechnik, the technical engineering office of Deutsche Bahn AG. More than 120 participants from 17 countries followed the invitation to the wo- shop. This great response showed the continuing interest in an important topic of railway technology and offered the opportunity to present the recent results of intense worldwide activities to the international community of railway noise and vibration experts and to share knowledge as well as experience. Because an efficient transportation network is indispensable to handle the general mobility increase and road networks have reached their socio-ecological limits, the railway network is to be strengthened. For example the European Commission has given distinct political signals to get more passengers onto the railways. This policy represents a clear challenge for the next few decades not only for European railway companies: the considerable increase in mobility will lead to a doubling of the railway traffic volume within the next 10 to 20 years. To reduce the environmental impact, the Directive on the Assessment and M- agement of Environmental Noise has been put into force in Europe, aiming at avo- ing, preventing or reducing harmful effects of environmental noise on human health.

As with other areas of biological research, the progress that has been made over the past 25 years in the field of cell adhesion is impressive. In the late 1970s, the searchfor specific cell surface receptors for adhesion processes was initiated - ing mainly biochemical and immunological approaches. Since then, theint- duction of novel methods of cellular and molecular biology and powerful te- niques for manipulatinggene expression in transgenic and knock-out mice have greatlyadvanced the field. Not only dowe now know the precise molecular structure of many of thecell adhesion receptors that were postulated to exist in the early days, but we have a clear picture of their function, and evidence of their involvement in signal transduction. We have also found clues to the role of cell adhesion in normal embryonal development and adult physiology, and we have evidence that disturbance in cell adhesion can cause disease. In this volume, our goal was to provide an overview of the main topics of c- rent cell adhesion research, including structural analyses of cell adhesion mo- cules and studies of their functionalrole in vitroand in vivo. We have focussed mainly on the four major families of cell-adhesion receptors, i. e. the cadherins, the integrins, the Ig superfamily and the selectin-based adhesion system. The chapters by Perez and Nelson and Choi and Weis describethe structuralbasis of cadherin function, focussing on the extracellular domain of cadherins and thecytoplasmic tail interactions with catenins, respectively.
