"Beautifully researched and masterfully told" (Alex Kershaw, "New
York Times "bestselling author of "Escape from the Deep"), this is
the riveting story of the heroic and tragic US submarine force that
helped win World War II in the Pacific.
Focusing on the unique stories of three of the war's top
submarines--"Silversides," "Drum," and "Tang"--"The War Below
"vividly re-creates the camaraderie, exhilaration, and fear of the
brave volunteers who took the fight to the enemy's coastline in
World War II. Award-winning journalist James Scott recounts
incredible feats of courage--from an emergency appendectomy
performed with kitchen utensils to sailors' desperate struggle to
escape from a flooded submarine--as well as moments of unimaginable
tragedy, including an attack on an unmarked enemy freighter
carrying 1,800 American prisoners of war.
The casualty rate among submariners topped that of all other
military branches. The war claimed almost one out of every five
submarines, and a submarine crewman was six times more likely to
die than a sailor onboard a surface ship. But this valorous service
accomplished its mission; "Silversides," "Drum," and "Tang "sank a
combined sixty-two freighters, tankers, and transports. The
Japanese were so ravaged from the loss of precious supplies that by
the war's end, pilots resorted to suicidal kamikaze missions and
hungry civilians ate sawdust while warships had to drop anchor due
to lack of fuel. In retaliation, the Japanese often beat, tortured,
and starved captured submariners in the atrocious prisoner of war
camps.
Based on more than 100 interviews with submarine veterans and
thousands of pages of previously unpublished letters and diaries,
"The War Below "lets readers experience the battle for the Pacific
as never before.

souls are crushed. Is there any way to put Metal Baby to sleep?
Illustrator Brandon James Scott joins the author of Fluffy
McWhiskers Cuteness Explosion and I Can't Draw to create this
hilarious, hard-rocking romp of a picture book!
The irresistible companion to I Was Born a Baby—a hilarious
read-aloud with catchy rhymes and bold, silly art about animals and
the places they call home! I live in a tree trunk. I live in a
barn. I live in a shoebox. I’m down on the farm… Soon all the
other animals can’t help but share what their homes are called,
too. Readers will learn about porcupines, salamanders, groundhogs,
and more. But when the rabbit, platypus, and meerkat realize their
homes share the same name, they can’t believe it. “Are you for
SURE? I had NO clue!†becomes a catchy, energetic refrain readers
will love chanting. ? The text invites readers to predict what the
animal is by using context clues and checking the endpapers to see
if they guessed right. The strong rhythm and unexpected discoveries
of the animal kingdom, plus deadpan humor and wonderfully
expressive art will spark a conversation about habitats and nature
and leave readers wanting to read it aloud again and again.
First published in 1987. This is volume 9 of the libray of peasant
studies series. The contributors focus on a vast and relatively
unexplored middle-ground of peasant politics between passivity and
open, collective defiance. The general rubric for these phenomena
is 'everyday resistance' - a term that is self-consciously homely.
Cow says . . . Meow! Cat says . . . Neigh! . . . or does it? With
bold graphic art and a punny narrator, this zany picture book is
full of outrageously mixed-up animal sounds. Puns and wordplay will
leave readers giggling through the roller-coaster of sounds all the
way to the final pages featuring the correct animal noises. Cow
Says Meow is a perfect read aloud for home, the classroom, or
anywhere else, and will delight fans of Cece Bell's I Yam a Donkey
and David Ezra Stein's Interrupting Chicken.
This book explores tensions in global trade by examining the role
of experts in generating, disseminating and legitimating knowledge
about the possibilities of trade to work for global development. To
this end, contributors assess authoritative claims on knowledge.
They also consider structural features that uphold trade experts'
monopoly over knowledge, such as expert language and legal and
economic expertise. The chapters collectively explore the tensions
between actors who seek to effect change and those who work to
uphold the status quo, exacerbate asymmetries, and reinforce the
dominant narrative of the global trade regime. The book addresses
the following key overarching research questions: Who is considered
to be a trade expert and how does one become a knowledge producer
in global trade? How do experts acquire, disseminate and legitimate
knowledge? What agendas are advanced by expert knowledge? How does
the discourse generated within trade expertise serve to close off
alternative institutional pathways and modes of thinking? What
potential exists for the emergence of more emancipatory global
trade policies from contemporary developments in the field of trade
expertise? This book will be of great interest to students and
scholars of IPE, Trade Politics, International Relations, and
International Organizations.
This work seeks to look beyond the seemingly endless deadlock in
the WTO's Doha round of trade negotiations that began in November
2001 and were first scheduled to conclude by January 1, 2005. As
well as offering an incisive analysis of the ills of the round,
with particular attention directed at the poorest and least
developed countries, the book expands on how the round could be
moved forward elaborating on the Statement on the Doha Development
Agenda that was negotiated in Johannesburg . The work as a whole
provides the reader with a critical analysis of the implications of
the negotiations for development and poverty reduction as well as
proposals for moving beyond the current impasse. The volume brings
together contributions from serving and former ambassadors to the
WTO, key practitioners, and civil society representatives along
with those of leading scholars. Each chapter explores an area of
critical importance to the round; and together they stand as an
important contribution to debates not only about the Doha round but
also about the role of trade in the amelioration of poverty in the
poorest countries.

After a period of stability and peace during the early years of the century, Charles I set about carrying out administrative and religious reform in England, Scotland and Wales. The revolution that this prompted in Scotland was to repeat itself in Ireland, and four years later lead to civil war in England. Connecting the strategic and tactical levels of war with political actions and reactions, Wheeler discusses how Britain and Ireland became battlegrounds in the 'war of three kingdoms'. With numerous maps and illustrations, the various stages of this period of turmoil are clearly demonstrated, right through to the execution of Charles I, the conquest of Catholic Ireland, and the eventual death of the English Republic.

and change. This book emphasizes personal awareness,
self-knowledge, and honest communication among majority and

General Jacob L. "Jake" Devers (1897--1979) was one of only two
officers -- the other was Omar C. Bradley -- to command an army
group during the decisive campaigns of 1944--1945 that liberated
Europe and ended the war with Nazi Germany. After the war, Devers
led the Army Ground Forces in the United States and eventually
retired in 1949 after forty years of service. Despite incredible
successes on the battlefield, General George C. Marshall's
"dependable man" remains one of the most underrated and overlooked
figures of his generation. In this definitive biography, James
Scott Wheeler delivers a groundbreaking reassessment of the
American commander whose contributions to victory in Europe are
topped only by General Dwight D. Eisenhower's. Wheeler's
exhaustively researched chronicle of Devers's life and career
reveals a leader who demonstrated an extraordinary ability to cut
through red tape and solve complex problems. Nevertheless,
Eisenhower disliked Devers -- a fact laid bare when he ordered
Devers's Sixth Army Group to halt at the Rhine. After the war,
Eisenhower's and Bradley's accounts of the generals' disagreements
over strategy and tactics became received wisdom, to the detriment
of Devers's reputation. An essential contribution to
twentieth-century history, Jacob L. Devers provides a fresh and
nuanced interpretation of the senior command during World War II
and offers a new perspective on a highly accomplished soldier.
