An important forerunner of Adam Smith, James Steuart's economic
thought largely influenced and anticipated that of Malthus, and is
acknowledged in Marx's "Das Kapital" no less than 13 times.
McCulloch recognized Steuart as the author of "the first English
work which had any pretensions to be considered as a systematic and
complete view of the subject". Yet Steuart's work was almost
totally eclipsed during the domination of classical orthodoxy in
19th century economic theory. Although his major work, "An Inquiry
into the Principles of Political Economy" [1767] was well received,
Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations", published nine years later,
totally ignored the book and thus greatly weakened Steuart's
reputation as a serious economist. In recent times, however, the
importance and quality of Steuart's contributions on many central
questions of economic theory has been recognized. A comparison with
Smith's analysis of economic policy shows Steuart's thought to be
enriched by his experiences in Europe of a wide and varied range of
economic, social and political conditions.
Dieses Buch will einem Leser, der uber hinlangliche Grundkenntnisse
der Chemie und Physik verfugt, aber mit der modernen Chemie nicht
vertraut ist, einen vielseitigen Einblick in das Wesen moderner
Chemie geben. Es entstand aus einer Reihe von Vorlesungen, die ich
als Professor der Chemie an der Universitat in London mehrere Jahre
lang fur meine Studenten im ersten Semester gehalten habe. Mit
diesen Vorlesungen wollte ich ursprung lich nur dem veralteten
Schulunterricht, mit dem diese Studenten zur Unive- sitat kamen,
entgegenwirken. Doch bald stellten sich noch weitere Vorteile
heraus. Einmal gestattete dieser Kurs den Studenten einen Blick aus
der Vogelschau auf die moderne Chemie, so dass sie das Gebiet schon
als Ganzes kennengelernt hatten, noch bevor sie sich spater mit dem
Studium der Einzel heiten befassten. Und schliesslich war es
dadurch moglich, die moderne Orbital theorie in anorganische wie
organische Chemie von Anfang an einzuflechten und die Reaktivitat
mit der Vorstellung des Ubergangszustandes zu verbinden. Mit diesem
Buch hoffe ich Anregungen zu ahnlichen Versuchen zu geben, und ich
bin davon uberzeugt, dass solche Versuche fur Lehrer wie Studenten
sehr erfreulich ausfallen werden. Fur viele wertvolle Anregungen,
kritische Stellungnahmen und Verbesse rungen schulde ich meinen
Freunden, die mehrere Entwurfe dieses Buches gelesen haben, grossen
