This book draws on contemporary theory and recent findings to
provide researchers, professionals, undergraduate and graduate
students with essential resources, allowing them to better
understand and support children, youth and adults with autism and
significant communication impairments. The book consists of 11
chapters organized into 3 sections detailing typical and atypical
prelinguistic development for individuals on the autism spectrum,
together with a range of assessment and intervention approaches
that clinicians and educators can draw on in practice. The book
adopts a lifespan perspective, recognizing that there is an
important and particularly challenging sub-group of children on the
spectrum who remain minimally verbal beyond the age of 8 years.
Each chapter summarizes current research on a selected topic,
identifies key challenges faced by researchers, educators and
clinicians, and considers the implications for research and
practice. The concluding chapter considers issues of research
translation and how educators and clinicians can encourage the use
of evidence-based practices for prelinguistic and minimally verbal
individuals.
One woman's quest for revenge, a dangerous international
conspiracy, and ruthless corporations intertwine in this
page-turner from bestselling author James W. Hall. Despite Harper
McDaniel's best efforts, the man responsible for the murder of her
husband and son was exonerated thanks to some slick legal
wrangling. This blatant injustice has only made Harper more
determined than ever to bring down the culprit. Her ammunition?
Incriminating information about his olive oil operations in Italy.
But the clues that she follows are leading her into the depths of a
corrupt plot that is more poisonous and far-reaching than she
realizes. And more dangerous, too, because her enemy is prepared
for her pursuit. Accompanied by her brother and mobster
grandfather, Harper treks across Spain from Seville to a medieval
castle, home to a successful olive farmer who is one of Harper's
closest allies. Shadowed every step of the way by a ruthless
assassin, Harper is moving ever deeper into enemy territory-and
questioning whom she can really trust on this personal path of
justice and revenge.

What do Michael Corleone, Jack Ryan, and Scout Finch have in
common? Creative writing professor and thriller writer Hall reveals
how bestsellers work using 12 of the biggest novels of the 20th
century in this fun book.
James W. Hall is the critically acclaimed author of eleven crime novels, including Body Language and Blackwater Sound. He's also published four books of poetry. And several of his short stories have appeared in magazines like the Georgia Review and Kenyon Review.
Now, writing in the spirit of Dave Barry and Garrison Keillor, Hall wins a new kind of reader with this collection of essays that run from insightful to opinionated, funny to wise.
Hall ponders subjects as diverse as his own love affair with Florida which began on a trip after college from which he never returned, to his equally passionate romance with books. He ponders the nature of summer heat, the writing of Hemingway and James Dickey, television, teaching, politics, fatherhood and much more. In the vibrant and elegant prose which characterize his fiction and poetry, Hall now proves himself a master of the essay as well.
James W. Hall s haunting debut novel first introduced the rugged
character Thorn and the breathtaking South Florida landscape where
he lives. Thorn s past includes a savage act of revenge on the
drunken hit-and-run killer of his parents. Now, fifteen years
later, Thorn still cannot escape that moment, or the darkness he
took into his soul that night. Not even his best friend, Sugarman,
knows the truth. Not even Sarah Ryan knows the depths of her lover
s pain. Then suddenly, the nightmare begins again as Thorn s foster
mother is found slaughtered. Thorn can almost taste the rage as he
stalks her killer and waits. "An exciting, well-crafted first novel
that smoothly places complex, believable characters into an
action-filled plot." Washington Post "It starts good and stays
good, right to the end." Chicago Tribune"
The rugged Florida troubleshooter Thorn is back in another high-tension story of crime, love, and revenge, described by the Chicago Tribune as "wry, vivid, wonderful. . . . A first-rate thriller!"
In an exotic blue-water locale where greed and criminality thrive, the mysterious disappearance of Thorn's boyhood friend Gaeton Richards, an FBI agent, entangles Thorn in a web of violence and intrigue that takes him from seamy local bars to glittering ocean villas. Then, when Gaeton's beautiful sister becomes Thorn's lover, he finds himself facing a jealous lunatic stalking her, a rogue government agent involved in a murderous scam, and an unforgettable underworld of petty crooks, amoral hired guns, and dangerous losers. "A terrific read with a gritty and tangible sense of place, a hero who's a cross between Davy Crockett and Philip Marlowe, and a lyrical, almost poetic touch in scenes both sexual and violent." — Orlando Sentinel "Provocative and suspenseful . . . a worthy and brilliant successor to Under Cover of Daylight." — Jackson, Mississippi, Clarion-Ledger "James Hall's writing is astringent, penetrating, and unfailingly gripping." — Dean Koontz - "Menacing . . . brilliantly written!" — USA Today
- "James W. Hall's lyrical passion for the Florida keys, his spare language and unusual images haunt us long after the story has faded." — New York TimesBook Review
- "Explosive . . . suspenseful . . . action galore." — Worcester Telegram & Gazette
- A selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club
James W. Hall's latest thriller is Body Language (St. Martin's, September 1998). He lives in South Florida.
Hall and Mercer's text is intended for schools that want a single
book covering the standard topics from elementary algebra through
intermediate algebra. The text is fully integrated, rather than
being simply the joining of two, separate texts. Topics are
organized not following the historical pattern, but by using as the
guiding principles, the AMATYC standards as outlined in Crossroads
in Mathematics. BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: THE LANGUAGE
AND SYMBOLISM OF MATHEMATICS is oriented toward recent reforms in
college level mathematics curricula.
Thorn is back! The hero of last year's surprise suspense hit, Under
Cover of Daylight, Thorn is a Key Largo fisherman turned avenger
despite himself and cursed with a nose for trouble. The mysterious
disappearance of his boyhood friend, an FBI agent, entangles Thorn
in a web of violence in the exotic locale of the Caribbean.
Nine stories deal with a cosmopolitan woman's return to her rural
roots, a writers conference, summer camp, a husband's ghost, a
young plumber, baldness, and small town life.
