Chemistry of Modern Papermaking (Paperback): Cornel Hagiopol, James W Johnston Chemistry of Modern Papermaking (Paperback)
Cornel Hagiopol, James W Johnston
R1,494 Discovery Miles 14 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Chemistry of Modern Papermaking presents a chemist's perspective on the papermaking process. With roughly 3% of the mass of a paper product invested in water-soluble chemicals, paper makers can adjust the speed and efficiency of the process, minimize and reuse surplus materials, and differentiate a paper product as required by specific customers. With research and development scattered across academic journals or the proprietary information of a variety of companies, the modern paper maker requires a one-stop resource for the general picture of the paper chemicals organic chemistry. The remarkable effectiveness of chemicals at very low concentrations is a fascinating topic in paper chemistry. Chemistry of Modern Papermaking is an extensive collection of data combining the organic chemistry of paper with its potential applications. Within each chapter, paper chemicals are organized based on their chemical structure. After an introduction and brief history, the book explores the papermaking process, retention aids, temporary wet strength resins, wet strength resins, dry strength resins, internal sizing agents, creping adhesives and softeners, and chemicals for paper surface treatment. Uniquely, patents and scientific articles are included in almost equal number among the 3400 references. Chemistry of Modern Papermaking focuses on the chemistry behind each application, on what has been done, and on what can be done. Never before has a book analytically arranged and lucidly explained such an expansive collection of details from both the patent and scientific literature. This synthesis is achieved not only through diligent work, but also through years of industrial experience.

Advances in Chemoreception - Volume I Communication by Chemical Signals (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Advances in Chemoreception - Volume I Communication by Chemical Signals (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1970)
James W Johnston
R1,458 Discovery Miles 14 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research on the chemical senses has been growing at a remarkable rate over the last decade. This growth has greatly expanded our understanding of the electrical properties and ultrastructure of chemosensory organs, of the role of chemoreception in the control of behavior, of the organization of higher centers in the chemosensory pathways, and of the chemical constituents of mixtures of biologic significance. But one area where advances have been especially impressive is concerned with the properties of pheromones and substances with similar biologic effects. Pheromones are compounds, produced by certain animals, which have the effect of inducing one or more specific responses within members of the same or closely related species. Some of these substances-the "primer" pheromones-act on the endocrine system, probably through the central nervous system. The pregnancy block induced in mice by the odor of strange males is a striking example. Others, such as "signalling" or "releaser" pheromones, elicit an immediate behavioral response. Sex attractants are prominent examples of this group. While the chemical identity of these compounds is known, in a relatively few cases (and these, mainly in insects) we now have extensive information about their impact on the receiving organism at the receptor, physiologic and behavioral levels.

Healthcare Writing - A Practical Guide to Professional Success (Paperback): Michael A. Arntfield, James W Johnston Healthcare Writing - A Practical Guide to Professional Success (Paperback)
Michael A. Arntfield, James W Johnston
R1,171 Discovery Miles 11 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Notable for its use of real document examples throughout in addition to its central section's extended focus on narrative medicine and new media writing, Healthcare Writing: A Practical Guide to Professional Success provides a wide-ranging, much-needed contemporary interdisciplinary perspective on the modes and contexts of writing that are most pertinent to healthcare professionals today. Aimed at students enrolled in university or college-level healthcare programs of various types as well as at current practitioners who might be seeking a portable, readable reference and guide, this book usefully and practically combines the detailed discussion of approaches to key healthcare document types - both professional and academic - with a thorough but focused overview of essential points of grammar, punctuation, and style.

The Long Road of War - A Marine's Story of Pacific Combat (Paperback): Peter Maslowski The Long Road of War - A Marine's Story of Pacific Combat (Paperback)
Peter Maslowski; James W Johnston
R811 Discovery Miles 8 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

James W. Johnston was a self-confessed small-town youth, who like so many others patriotically stopped what he was doing and enlisted shortly after Pearl Harbor. Johnston chose the Marines, a decision that sent him to years of bloody combat through the Pacific as Allied troops fought their way toward the Japanese home islands. Many did not come back; of those who did, very few have told us what it was like. Johnston tells us directly and honestly, taking us with his First Marine Division through New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa.
