The revolution in tabletop gaming revealed and reviewed, in this
entertaining and informative look at over 40 years of award-winning
games. The annual Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) Awards are
like the Oscars of the tabletop. Acclaimed British author and games
expert James Wallis investigates the winners and losers of each
year's contest to track the incredible explosion in amazing new
board games. From modern classics like CATAN, Ticket to Ride, and
Dixit to once-lauded games that have now been forgotten (not to
mention several popular hits that somehow missed a nomination),
this is a comprehensive yet hugely readable study of the best board
games ever made, penned by one of the most knowledgeable
commentators on the hobby.

In the cavern-like darkness of the arcade, the neon phosphor-glow
of the screen beckons you close. Drawn to the dancing pixels like a
moth to a flame, digging deep in your pocket you pull out a shiny
coin and thumb it into the slot as the electronic siren sings the
fanfare that marks your arrival. One hand on the joystick, the
other splayed across the control buttons, your pulse begins to
quicken. Ready Player One Press StartYou've barely begun but
suddenly the discordant bleeps are trumpeting your failure as your
8-bit adventure comes to an abrupt end. At least in the world of
the video arcade you get a second chance. But what is the true
price you pay when you make a pact with the digital demon? There's
always another coin, an extra life to be earned, a second
chance...Isn't there?GAME OVERA dozen stories of creeping dread and
savage horror inspired by the humble amusement arcade and the
classic coin-ops of yesteryear. Twelve tales to chill your blood by
twelve masters of the malevolent and the macabre.Just keep
reminding yourself, it's only a game...Isn't it?
Sports coaches apply their skills in a wider variety of contexts,
and with a more diverse range of athletes and participants, than
ever before. This book introduces the professional competencies and
knowledge needed to build successful working relationships across
the different communities and groups with which coaches operate.
The book offers important insight for coaches who work with
specific populations including different age groups; black, Asian
and minority ethnic (BAME) people; those of different gender or
sexual orientation; individuals with disabilities or illness; the
socio-economically disadvantaged; and refugees. Drawing on
real-world case studies, such as coaching girls in combat sports
and coaching cardiac rehab patients, and adopting a critical
approach to values, philosophy and pedagogic process, this book
argues that understanding the recipient of coaching and their
particular needs is as important as content knowledge. With
contributions from leading coaching researchers and practitioners,
this is important reading for developing coaches, students on
sports courses and other individuals involved in the sport pedagogy
domain who seek to gain a better understanding of the demands of
meeting the specific needs of people in the coaching process.

This is the first book to bring together an interdisciplinary,
theoretically engaged and global perspective on the First World War
through the lens of historical and cultural geography. Reflecting
the centennial interest in the conflict, the collection explores
the relationships between warfare and space, and pays particular
attention to how commemoration is connected to spatial elements of
national identity, and processes of heritage and belonging.
Venturing beyond military history and memory studies, contributors
explore conceptual contributions of geography to analyse the First
World War, as well as reflecting upon the imperative for an
academic discussion on the War's centenary. This book explores the
War's impact in more unexpected theatres, blurring the boundary
between home and fighting fronts, investigating the experiences of
the war amongst civilians and often overlooked combatants. It also
critically examines the politics of hindsight in the post-war
period, and offers an historical geographical account of how the
First World War has been memorialised within 'official' spaces, in
addition to those overlooked and often undervalued 'alternative
spaces' of commemoration. This innovative and timely text will be
key reading for students and scholars of the First World War, and
more broadly in historical and cultural geography, social and
cultural history, European history, Heritage Studies, military
history and memory studies.

A 'coach' is more than just somebody who leads in the organisation
and delivery of structured sport. The role of a coach goes beyond
leadership, requiring an understanding of theories of teaching and
learning. To become a coach you must know how people learn.
Becoming a Sports Coach aims to introduce the multi-dimensional and
inter-locking knowledge bases that any aspiring coach will need to
develop, and that any established coach needs to master in order to
improve their professional practice. While traditional coach
education pathways have focused on what to coach, this book argues
that understanding how knowledge can be communicated to learners is
just as important. Asking why we coach, through critical reflection
and self-knowledge, is also an essential part of the process of
becoming a sports coach. The book explores three types of knowledge
- content knowledge, pedagogic knowledge and self-knowledge -
challenging the reader to reflect on their own coaching experiences
and to develop a personal philosophy of coaching. It explores key
pedagogic themes in contemporary coaching studies, such as
humanistic coaching, inclusive practice, coaching for
understanding, and the athlete-coach relationship. Real case
studies are used to illuminate the ways - transferrable across
sports - in which coaches can apply theory to practice and
ultimately enhance their work. With contributions from leading
coaching researchers and practitioners, combining practical
guidance with important theoretical insights, this book will help
any coaching student or developing professional to better
understand the journey to becoming an effective sports coach.

Writing in response to our current "constitutional crisis," New
York Times bestselling author and Christian activist Jim Wallis
urges America to return to the tenets of Jesus once again as the
means to save us from the polarizing bitterness and anger of our
tribal nation. In Christ in Crisis? Jim Wallis provides a path of
spiritual healing and solidarity to help us heal the divide
separating Americans today. Building on "Reclaiming Jesus"--the
declaration he and other church leaders wrote in May 2018 to
address America's current crisis--Wallis argues that Christians
have become disconnected from Jesus and need to revisit their
spiritual foundations. By pointing to eight questions Jesus asked
or is asked, Wallis provides a means to measure whether we are
truly aligned with the moral and spiritual foundations of our
Christian faith. "Christians have often remembered, re-discovered,
and returned to their obedient discipleship of Jesus Christ--both
personal and public--in times of trouble. It's called coming home,"
Wallis reminds us. While he addresses the dividing lines and
dangers facing our nation, the religious and cultural commentator's
focus isn't politics; it's faith. As he has done throughout his
career, Wallis offers comfort, empathy, and a practical roadmap.
Christ in Crisis is a constructive field guide for all those
involved in resistance and renewal initiatives in faith communities
in the post-2016 political context.
