The series MISCELLANEA MEDIAEVALIA was founded by Paul Wilpert in 1962 and since then has presented research from the Thomas Institute of the University of Cologne. The cornerstone of the series is provided by the proceedings of the biennial Cologne Medieval Studies Conferences, which were established over 50 years ago by Josef Koch, the founding director of the Institute. The interdisciplinary nature of these conferences is reflected in the proceedings. The relationship between the Late Middle Ages and the beginning of modern times is still acontroversial topic discussed. Some view the 14th and 15th century as a period of decline, others emphasize this era's formative and innovative role in modern times. Volume 31 of Miscellanea Mediaevalia takes an interdisciplinary look at this period while addressing critical, classic evaluations. More than 30 contributions discuss the philosophy of the Late Middle Ages (with special attention to moral and natural philosophy), scientific institutions of the Late Middle Ages, the architecture, economic and legal history, and the spirituality in the Late Middle Ages, as well as prominent figures such as Jean Gerson and Nicholasof Cusa.

Starker als in anderen Epochen pragte im Mittelalter die Eschatologie das Verstandnis vom Menschen und der Welt. Die Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes widmen sich der eschatologischen Orientierung des Mittelalters in ihrer Vielschichtigkeit und ihren Wechselwirkungen. Schwerpunkte bilden hierbei Fragen nach dem Einfluss und der Gestaltung eschatologischer Motive in der Philosophie sowie nach der Bedeutung der Vorstellungen vom Ende im politischen Denken des Mittelalters. Daneben werden weitere Themen aus dem Bereich der Geschichtswissenschaft, der Theologie sowie der Kunst- und Literaturwissenschaften behandelt. Der 29. Band der Miscellanea Mediaevalia enthalt die Vortrage der 32. Koelner Mediaevistentagung vom September 2000, erweitert um einige zusatzliche Beitrage. Funf Aufsatze zur 50-jahrigen Geschichte des Thomas-Instituts, seit einem halben Jahrhundert der Veranstalter der Koelner Mediaevistentagung, erganzen diesen Band.

Das 13. Jahrhundert steht haufig stellvertretend fur das Mittelalter uberhaupt. Der vorliegende Band will neue Perspektiven zur Erforschung dieses Jahrhunderts aufzeigen. Schwerpunkte des Bandes sind Fragen aus dem Bereich der theoretischen und praktischen Philosophie, der Theologie, der Institutionengeschichte, Problemstellungen aus Literatur, Kunst, Bildung und Erziehung sowie das Aufeinandertreffen der Kulturwelten. Der 27. Band der Miscellanea Mediaevalia enthalt die Vortrage der 31. Koelner Mediavistentagung vom September 1998, erweitert um einige zusatzliche Beitrage. Gemass der Grundidee der Koelner Mediavistentagungen vereinigt der vorliegende Band in 10 Sektionen 38 Beitrage aus Philosophie und Historie, Literaturgeschichte und Theologie, aus der Geschichte der Wissenschaften und der Kunste.
