Edgar Allan Poe wields more influence in the spheres of literature and popular culture on a world scale than any other US author. This influence, however, does not rely on the quality of Poe's texts alone nor on the compellingly tragic nature of his biography; his reputation and his ubiquitous presence owe much of their longevity to the ways Poe has been interpreted and portrayed by his advocates-other writers, translators, literary critics, literary historians, illustrators, film makers, musicians-and packaged by various mediators in the literary field, especially editors and anthologizers. As this study demonstrates, the division between Poe's advocates and the mediators who organize his work for consumption by the reading public can be very porous since many of Poe's most adamant proponents-Charles Baudelaire and Julio Cortazar, for example-also anthologized, edited, and/or translated his works. Anthologizing Poe: Editions, Translations, and (Trans)national Canons focuses on the works produced by Poe's anthologizers and editors, both the famous and the lesser-known, whose labor often takes place behind the scenes. Poe's editors and anthologizers exercise real power, and over the last 170 years, they have crafted and framed the various Poes we recognize, revere, cherish, and critique today.

Traditional histories of the American transcendentalist movement begin in Ralph Waldo Emerson's terms: describing a rejection of college books and church pulpits in favor of the individual power of "Man Thinking." This essay collection asks how women who lacked the privileges of both college and clergy rose to thought. For them, reading alone and conversing together were the primary means of growth, necessarily in private and informal spaces both overlapping with those of the men and apart from them. But these were means to achieving literary, aesthetic, and political authority-- indeed, to claiming utopian possibility for women as a whole.

"Toward a Female Genealogy of Transcendentalism" is a project of both archaeology and reinterpretation. Many of its seventeen distinguished and rising scholars work from newly recovered archives, and all offer fresh readings of understudied topics and texts. First quickened by the 2010 bicentennial of Margaret Fuller's birth, the project reaches beyond Fuller to her female predecessors, contemporaries, and successors throughout the nineteenth century who contributed to or grew from the transcendentalist movement.

Geographic scope also widens--from the New England base to national and transatlantic spheres. A shared goal is to understand this "genealogy" within a larger history of American women writers; no absolute boundaries divide idealism from sentiment, romantics from realists, or white discourse from black. Primary-text interludes invite readers into the ongoing task of discovering and interpreting transcendentally affiliated women. This collection recognizes the vibrant contributions women made to a major literary movement and will appeal to both scholars and general readers.

This is the first major effort in twenty years to reassess the relationship between Melville and Hawthorne.Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne met in 1850 and enjoyed for sixteen months an intense but brief friendship. Taking advantage of new interpretive tools such as queer theory, globalist studies, political and social ideology, marketplace analysis, psychoanalytical and philosophical applications to literature, masculinist theory, and critical studies of race, the twelve essays in this book focus on a number of provocative personal, professional, and literary ambiguities existing between the two writers.Jana L. Argersinger and Leland S. Person introduce the volume with a lively summary of the known biographical facts of the two writers' relationship and an overview of the relevant scholarship to date. Some of the essays that follow broach the possibility of sexual dimensions to the relationship, a question that ""looms like a grand hooded phantom"" over the field of Melville-Hawthorne studies. Questions of influence - Hawthorne's on Moby-Dick and Pierre and Melville's on The Blithedale Romance, to mention only the most obvious instances - are also discussed. The other topics covered include professional competitiveness; Melville's search for a father figure; masculine ambivalence in the marketplace; and political-literary aspects of nationalism, transcendentalism, race, and other defining issues of Hawthorne and Melville's times.Roughly half of the essays focus on biographical issues; the others take literary perspectives. The essays are informed by a variety of critical approaches, as well as by new historical insights and new understandings of the possibilities that existed for male friendships in nineteenth-century American culture.
