With the growth of modern computing power it has become possible to
apply far more mathematics to real problems. This has led to the
difficulty that many people who have been working in various jobs
suddenly find themselves not understanding the modern processing
which is being applied to their own professional field. It also
means that the people presently being trained in these subjects
need to understand a much wider range of mathe matics than in the
past. It is to both of these groups that this book is addressed.
The major objective is to present the reader with the basic
mathematical understanding to follow the new developments in their
own field. The mathematics in this book is based on the need to
understand signal process ing. The modern work in this area is
mathematically very sophisticated and our purpose is not to train
professional mathematicians but to make far more of the literature
accessible. Since this book is based on courses devised for Racal
Geophysics there is clearly going to be a bias towards the
applications in that area, as the title implies. It is also true
that the bibliogra phy has been chosen in order to aid the reader
in that field by pointing them in the direction of recent
applications in geophysics."
Janacek wrote regular articles for the Brno daily paper and in
these he expressed his attitude and feelings towards the everyday
things in nature and human situations which had commanded his
attention. The sounds he heard, especially the human voice, he
annotated with musical sketches and these appear in this book in
his own words and serve to illuminate the works which this great
composer produced. The thirty-odd articles are grouped under
Memories of Youth, The Sounds of Music, Travel, Birds, while
included under Operatic Studies is a fascinating account of the
origins of The Cunning Little Vixen. The book also contains some
rare photographs and music examples, many in Janacek's own hand.
Der tschechische Philologe Karel Janacek (1906 - 1996) war "the
most eminent Sextan scholar of the century" (Jonathan Barnes).
Neben seinen beiden Sextus-Monographien (Prolegomena to Sextus
Sammelbanden veroeffentlichten Studien liegen alle in diesem Band
versammelt vor. Zehn ursprunglich auf tschechisch verfassten
Studien - darunter eine eingehende "Analyse der Berichte uber die
Philosophie der Gorgias" - erscheinen hier zum ersten Mal in der
UEbertragung ins Deutsche. Der Band wird durch eine Wurdigung von
Karl Janaceks wissenschaftlichem OEuvre und Persoenlichkeit
eingeleitet.
These are the letters of a great love story. In 1917, the Czech
composer Leos Janacek met Kamila Stosslova while on holiday at
Luhacovice, a spa resort in Moravia. He was sixty-three and locked
in a loveless marriage; she was twenty-six, the wife of an antique
dealer frequently away from home. After the holiday, Janacek began
writing to Stosslova. Undeterred by her lack of interest in his
work and her spasmodic replies, he continued to send her letters
until his death eleven years later. An extraordinarily
self-revealing portrait emerges of an isolated artist at the height
of his creative powers and the beginning of his international fame.
It is also a portrait of a lonely man who, as the years went by,
came to fantasize about Stosslova as his true "wife"--the
inspiration for many of the works of his old age. Most of these
letters were suppressed until changing conditions in Czechoslovakia
allowed their full publication in 1990. John Tyrrell has edited and
translated a comprehensive selection, concentrating on the almost
daily letters of the final eighteen months. Supported by a diary of
meetings between Janacek and Stosslova, a decoding of the erotic
references in the letters, and a selection of mostly unknown
photographs, this remarkable book breathes life into the story one
of the greatest of operatic composers and provides vital clues to
the nature of his creative genius. Originally published in 1994.

First published in Russian in 1921 and never translated, Andrey
Bely's long narrative poem--considered to be one of the great
achievements of Russian Modernism--is translated to English here. A
poet, critic, philosopher, and novelist, Bely was a leading figure
among the Russian Symbolists, and The First Encounter is thought to
be his greatest work in verse. The poem is autobiographical and
reflects turn of-the-century Moscow with its mixture of entrenched
positivism and new spiritualistic trends, cultural variety and the
upheaval of the time. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton
