Over the past fifty years, only a small body of knowledge has been
published regarding libraries in prisons. Exploring the Roles and
Practices of Libraries in Prisons: International Perspectives aims
to strengthen and expand this body of knowledge, with each chapter
addressing different aspects of the roles and practices of library
services to prisons and prisoners. Writing from Croatia, Sri Lanka,
Scotland, Northern Ireland, Australia, Norway, Germany and the
United States of America, this edited collection focuses on prison
library programming, the role of prison libraries as supporters of
prisoner literacy development, censorship, future visions for
prison libraries, and descriptions of prison libraries across the
world. Libraries in both adult and juvenile prisons are studied, as
are prison libraries from diverse carceral contexts such as the
rapidly expanding American carceral system, through to the
'normalisation' prisons of Norway. This book will be of interest to
prison managers, education and custodial staff, prison librarians,
library and information studies academics and students, education
researchers and practitioners, readers interested in social
justice, education, censorship, prison life, and prison reform.
Psychodynamic Approaches to the Experience of Dementia:
Perspectives from Observation, Theory and Practice demonstrates the
impact of healthcare approaches that take into account not only the
practical needs but also the emotional experience of the patient,
their partners, families and friends, lay carers and professional
staff. Currently there is no cure for dementia, but the
psychosocial and therapeutic approaches described in this volume
have appeared to help people, both patients and carers, feel more
contained and less lonely and isolated. Psychoanalytic theory
provides a disciplined way of thinking about the internal world of
an individual and their relationships. Each author provides their
own commentary on the personal and interpersonal effects of
dementia, endeavouring to understand behaviours and emotions which
may otherwise seem incomprehensible. The subject is approached from
a psychodynamic perspective, considering the unconscious, previous
and current experiences and relationships, including those between
patients and staff. Psychodynamic Approaches to the Experience of
Dementia illustrates the practical and theoretical thinking of
clinicians from a wide range of disciplines who are engaged in the
care of people in late life with a diagnosis of dementia. It will
be essential reading for mental health and health professionals in
practice and training in the field of dementia.
'Talking Over the Years' illuminates the psychodynamic theories of
the 20th century & turns its attentions to the thorny issues of
ageing & the complications of later life. It provides detailed
descriptions of psychoanalytic theory together with the use of
psychodynamic concepts in clinical practice. Illustrated by a
wealth of clinical material, Talking Over the Years increases
psychodynamic awareness, helping practitioners become more
sensitive to their patients' needs to the benefit of both the
patient and the professional. How can we work effectively with
older people? What contribution can be made by the field of
psychodynamics? It is now recognised that older adults can benefit
from psychodynamic therapy and that psychodynamic concepts can help
to illuminate the thorny issues of aging and the complications of
later life. Talking Over the Years begins by examining how ideas of
old age are represented by the key psychodynamic theorists of the
twentieth century including Freud, Jung, Klein and Winnicott.
Contributors go on to draw on their own experiences in a range of
settings to demonstrate the value of psychodynamic concepts in
clinical practice, covering subjects such as: * brief and long-term
work with individuals, couples and groups * the expressive
therapies: art, music, dance and movement * ethical considerations
* training, supervision and support * sexuality. Illustrated by a
wealth of clinical material, Talking Over the Years increases
psychodynamic awareness, helping practitioners become more
sensitive to their patients' needs to the benefit of both the
patient and the professional.
