The ability for people to connect, learn, and communicate about
science has been enhanced through the Internet, specifically
through social media platforms. Facebook and Twitter are
well-studied, while Instagram is understudied. This Element
provides insight into using Instagram as a science education
platform by pioneering a set of calculated metrics, using a
paleontology-focused account as a case study. Framed by the theory
of affinity spaces, the authors conducted year-long analyses of 455
posts and 139 stories that were created as part of an informal
science learning project. They found that team activity updates and
posts outside of their other categories perform better than their
defined categories. For Instagram stories, the data show that fewer
slides per story hold viewers' attention longer, and stories using
the poll tool garnered the most interaction. This Element provides
a baseline to assess the success of Instagram content for science
communicators and natural science institutions.

Supporting People with Dementia at Home details a groundbreaking
study of an intensive care management scheme designed for older
people with dementia that are at risk of entry into residential
care. The authors use a quasi-experimental approach to compare how
the individuals on the mental health team in one community were
matched to a similar community without the service. They analyze
the evidence focusing on the eventual placement of the individual
suffering, the quality of care they receive, and also the needs of
their carers. This book offers valuable evidence about the factors
which can maximize the independence and well being of older people
with dementia, from the perspective of older people and their
carers. For those who commission services, it is highly relevant to
service models for the National Dementia Strategy in England.

Why am I so afraid of death? How would my life be enhanced if that
fear dissolved? An Insistence on Life grew out of such questions,
as well as the personal accounts of death shared with author Jane
Hughes Gignoux. By showing us ways to face death with understanding
and grace, this remarkable book offers an exciting and
inspirational model for embracing life.
A valuable companion to the increasingly popular discussions on
the many issues surrounding death and dying, An Insistence will
lead readers on a surprisingly uplifting journey into this delicate
topic beyond traditional comfort zones.
The collection of poignant stories presents alternative
approaches to accepting the end of life. Follow a family
surrounding their elderly patriarch in his final months, finding
all past estrangements erased as love becomes the only medium of
exchange. Experience the joy and deep gratitude shared by a group
holding sacred "going home" vigils. Discover the common threads
woven throughout the stories as you encounter authentic moments of
people who generously share the lessons they've learned about
releasing fear and the transformation that ensues.
"Life is essentially a matter of storytelling," says Ms.
Gignoux. "We can't always control the events of our lives but we
can choose how we interpret them. When we simply allow life's
journey to flow, exploring death and dying when it comes into view,
our fears dissolve, enabling a deeper and expanded freedom to
live."
This book examines the interrelationship between the external
debt problem and the consolidation of democracy in Latin America in
the 1990s. It considers the interplay of actors, including creditor
governments, international financial institutions, debtor
countries, commercial banks, and multinational corporations, and
environment in the new decade, focusing on whether or not Latin
America's political regimes can strengthen and democratize their
respective economies while continuing to guarantee the country's
democratic politics.
The foreign debt problem casts an especially long shadow on the
Latin American democracies. While important in its own right,
understanding the Latin American experience is also essential in
light of changes in Eastern Europe. Despite many obvious cultural
differences and historical experiences, there are many parellels
between the two regions--democratization at a time of economic
crisis and of heavy external debt. This important new book
underscores the lessons of the Latin American experience, making it
essential reading for anyone concerned with the global economy.
This volume presents a compilation of cross-disciplinary essays
written by representatives of non-governmental and
inter-governmental organisations, practising lawyers, academics,
researchers and a psychiatrist, which reflect the heightened
concern among European refugee and human rights organisations about
the increasing practice of detaining asylum seekers.
Topics explored include recent trends in western, central and
eastern Europe; detention practice in the US, Canada and Australia;
UNHCR's approach to detention of refugees and asylum seekers; and
the mental health implications of detention from a psycho-medical
viewpoint. In addition, the relevant European and UN legal
instruments are analysed, and examples are given from the case law.
The book is supplemented by detailed appendices setting out the
texts of relevant international legal provisions, together with a
number of other reference documents, including UNHCR's 1995
Guidelines on Detention and ECRE's 1996 and 1997 papers on
detention and alternatives to detention.
In addition to providing both a description of current practice and
a theoretical, legal analysis of this type of administrative
detention, this volume is intended to serve as a practical tool and
source of reference for individuals and organisations engaged in
defending the rights of asylum seekers today.
